May 31, 2017 - Mildura/Buronga

Mildura The first European explorer to arrive was Capt. Charles Sturt in the 1830's. He found the headwaters of the river he called the Darling. Later he found another river he called the Murray. While navigating this river he found what he believed to be the confluence of the two rivers. After Capt. Sturt's discovery, settlers moved in to graze sheep and cattle. Once boats arrived in 1853, the regional town of Wentworth became a commerce center of the outback. The settlement of Mildura was founded in 1887, after Americans George and...

Nov 22, 2016 - Mildura on the mighty Murray

What a lovely area this is. Because of the heavy rains over the winter months, the Mighty Murray-Darling system is in flood. Wonderful to see, though we lost quite a few of the usual sightseeing spots, as they are underwater!! Spent half a day out in the Wentworth area, just over the border in NSW. The old Gaol was an interesting stop. They use that spelling of the word, as that is how it was spelt back when it was open. We spent a couple of lovely hours on the Paddle Steamer Melbourne seeing some of the more severe flooding of caravan...

Oct 13, 2016 - Heading home ...first stop Mildura

Packed up and headed on home. Decided to go to Mildura first and book a tour of the Mungo National Park on Friday if we could. We have a tour for tomorrow. We stopped off at Waikerie for lunch - nice little town on the Murray River before a quick scenic drive through and quick stop off at Bremera (we all remember the lake here on our ""Around Australia trip". Scenic drive through Renmark centre to see what it offers before heading across the border to Mildura and a return to the caravan park next to the shopping centre (we stayed here last...

Sep 25, 2016 - Coolamon to Mildura

Woke up early again, courtesy of Alexander - he thinks that as soon as it gets light it must be breakfast time. There was some light rain overnight & everything was even muddier than yesterday so I decided to move on, not sure how far I'd get. The road to Narrandera was still closed, a whole section of it has been washed away according to the lady in the newsagents, so I had to make another detour through Wagga. It was absolutely pelting down as I came through Wagga. The Murrumbidgee River is full but nowhere near the bridge. The road from...

Feb 8, 2016 - Wallaroo to Mildura

The last few days have been pretty quiet. We had one perfect day on Saturday but the others have been windy although still quite warm. I went to Port Broughton which was a nice drive but nothing remarkable about the town. I also went to Moonta Bay & Port Hughes which is where we stayed in 2007. I couldn't remember it at all so had a look around just to refresh my memory. We got home about 3:30pm yesterday so plenty of time to unpack, park the van, chat with the neighbours & collect my mail. It was warm in the afternoon but the house was...

Nov 20, 2015 - Mildura to Ballarat

After a very hot day yesterday (42.5ºC) & a warm night, it was quite different to arrive in Ballarat about 3:00pm today to 16ºC & raining. Fortunately, the rain stopped by the time I got to the caravan park & it was easy to set-up for an overnight stay in a drive-thru site. I went over to Lee’s about 4:30 but Jasmine was having an afternoon sleep. She eventually woke up about 5:30 & happily modelled the beautiful little hat my friend Brigitte made for her. I spent the evening with them, fed Jasmine a couple of times then decided I was...

Apr 29, 2015 - Melbourne to Mildura

I just need to finish the story. We had a strong tail-wind most of the way to Melbourne so it ended up being a 7½ hour flight, arriving at Melbourne airport at 6:00am local time (4:00am our time). Business Class was about half-full so I didn’t have anyone next to me. My flight to Mildura left at 8:30 but by the time I’d cleared immigration & customs, made my way to the domestic terminal & checked in again, I'd used up most of the waiting time. My friend Eve Byron was waiting at the airport so I was home about 10:00. My first priority was...

Sep 15, 2014 - Day 2

Sorry I have not been able to write. There was no internet connection. Not much time either! After a couple of hours in the car driving, we stopped at a place called Hay for lunch. In the evening we saw the Murray River and it is the longest river in Australia. We stayed in a cabin in Buronga (NSW) and on the other side of the Murray River was Mildura (Victoria).

May 27, 2014 - Paddle Steamer ride

Started off another beautiful morning after a bit of rain and a lot of wind overnight. Had me up at 1.00am rolling up the awning while she who resides in the next bed slept on. Either that or it was the best case of lying "doggo" I've witnessed. Comment this morning " I did think I heard something". Heard something??? Awning frame banging, awning flapping, ratchet doing what they do best, and that's clackety clack. It was like herd of elephants going thru. And I wasn't the only one. 4 other vans around us were doing the same thing. Only...

May 26, 2014 - Mildura

Friday night saw the Sequence come out again. The poor women are on a hiding to nothing. The guys trounced them again. It's just as well we let them win the first game of the rubber, otherwise I think it would be a very early night. Saturday arvo saw me feeling a lot better, so we went for a drive out to the wind farm. If you haven't seen a wind farm up close and personal, I've included some photos and facts. For some sense of scale, each propeller blade is 40 meters long and ways 7.5 tonnes times 3. That's a lot of weight for the wind to...

Sep 22, 2013 - Day 1 - Mildura

Hi All, Well, how civilised is this, 2230 (i.e. 10:30 at night for some), sitting OUTSIDE the Camper in a balmy 17 degrees. Navigator asleep at my feet, coffee made just right (yep, I brought it with me this time ), unwinding after a long but really good trip, about 400 Klms. The boys were fantastic today and when I gave them the choice of stopping about 130 Klms before Mildura or continuing on, they chose the latter…..both out of it now though…..no hassles getting them to bed tonight!! The trip itself was very smooth and peaceful, the...

Jun 15, 2013 - Kuala Lumpur to Mildura

I’m really tired of sitting around in airports. I know the girl at Malaysian Airlines in Paris was trying to do me a favour but it’s ended up being a real marathon with long layovers at Paris, Kuala Lumpur & the final straw was 6 hours at Melbourne airport. Because there’s no Business Class on the Melbourne-Mildura flight I didn’t have access to a lounge & didn’t want to get too comfortable anyway, in case I went to sleep & missed my flight. My total travel time from the hotel in Paris to Mildura was a bit over 48 hours. Mildura looked...
