Apr 2, 2017 - From Russia With Love

Well folks, she is on the move again. This has been a stop start trip for the last couple of months. Initially the trip was going to be Russia, Scandanavia, England/Scotland, Ireland but things changed and sister in law Maureen wasn't ready to go this time of year and John is unable to travel at present. Daughter Eloise and our pseudo daughter Vanessa then took up the baton and decided to make the trip to St. Petersburg and Moscow and of course, John wanted me to go along when there was an opportunity to go with someone so I invited myself...

Mar 28, 2017 - One day to go

Hello Dear Readers, It's that time again. Maree and I are off tomorrow morning on our trip to the Americas. First stop will be in LA where we will somehow manage to arrive on Wednesday nearly four hours before we leave. Such are the vagaries of the International Date Line. It seems that we will have the pleasure of two Wednesdays. We leave Melbourne at 10.15 am and arrive in Los Angeles at 6.45 am also on Wednesday. We will try to keep you up to date with our trip - photos and descriptions. Happy reading, Jack & Maree

Mar 12, 2017 - Party time

Next stop Melbourne. Melbourne is the capital of the State of Victoria. It is Australia's second largest city and a population of more than 4.5 million. Melbourne was founded 50 years after Sydney but unlike Sydney which had been built with the blood and sweat of Britain's outcasts, Melbourne's streets never echoed with the clank of chains and shackles. The new colony was built on the banks of the Yarra River by free settlers keen to establish a prosperous life for themselves. It is a green and welcoming city. It is famous as being home to...

Mar 7, 2017 - Melbourne to the Barossa Valley

After a 3 1/2 hour flight and two time zones we arrived in Melbourne airport. Although we were the first to get off the plane, we encountered huge snaking lineups for immigration. When we updated our passports in 2013 the new electronic ones were not available. This resulted in our being in the "other" category in a line along with 600 others - not a good system. By the time we got our rental car we had nearly eaten up our 2 hour time zone advantage. Our destination was Warrnambool on the Great Ocean highway. The weather was cool and windy,...

Feb 23, 2017 - Melbourne

We arrived in Melbourne in light showers and found the downtown location to pick up our apartment keys for our three day stay. Our Garmin GPS is working well after finding it used on EBay loaded with Aussie, Kiwi, N. America plus Europe maps!! Our one bedroom apartment was in St. Kilda, an upscale area three blocks from the ocean. It had a fully equipped kitchen and washer/dryer allowing us to catch up. Friends we had met on the cruise booked in an adjacent building and we got together for dinner and a long walk to scout out the...

Feb 4, 2017 - So long, Melbourne, we're off tomorrow morning!

31 January Happy 90th, Dad. Up early this morning as we had to break camp and leave the site by 10; not sure how long it will take us, packing up for the first time. All went very well, away by 10 on the dot (took a couple of hours!) and drove back to the Milawa Cheese Factory for brunch. A bit disappointing, wouldn't recommend it. Anyway, said goodbye to Carolyn and headed south. We drove down the King Valley, it narrowing as we reached the head of the valley at Cheshunt South, a very pleasant drive. Then the road climbed and wound its way...

Jan 31, 2017 - Melbourne and our first camp!

22 January Beautiful sunny day, off to visit Jane, John's sister in Queenscliffe, on the coast south of Melbourne. Once clear of the city we were in open coutryside, quite a pleasant drive. We turned off the highway at Geelong along the 'scenic route'. It was indeed very scenic, there was a regatta in the bay, lots of boats, then the road swung through their botanic gardens, very pretty. Back on the road, great views across Port Phillips until we drove across the narrow spit of land to Queenscliffe. Lovely quiet place even if the car parks...

Jan 21, 2017 - Melbourne

16 January Monday morning swim, lovely day, pool a bit warm (?), picked up flowers, back home for breakfast and final clean-up and packing before taxi srrived to tkae us to the airport. An easy drive in this time (on our arrival the roads were jammed), straight through checkin, bag drop and security and soon in the lounge for a bite to eat. Uneventful flight, except that they had run out of food, but had enough wine. Quaint Ass seem to be not very well organised, quite lackadaisical despite their ad campaign. Anyway, won't need to trouble...

Jun 30, 2016 - Plane Flight from Melbourne to Paris

The day of our flight did not go without hitches. I became unwell the day before with a very bad cough so made an appointment with Dr for 10.45, and our flight pickup was scheduled for 11.30 so was hoping Dr was on time. He was, and told just a virus but he did give me some antibiotics just in case it went down to my chest. So far so good I haven't needed them, but my cough is still quite bad. Our car pickup was 10 minutes early but we were ready so off we went to the airport with all our suitcases. We went through customs without a...

Jun 28, 2016 - The Night Before We go

Well, not long to go now. This is really to see if it works. I have not used this type of journal before. I keep on looking in the wardrobe and adding pieces to the suitcase, then I weigh it, and have to turf something out. It is really time to go so I just take what I have originally packed. The joys of travelling and not knowing what really to take. Take care everyone, and will see you all when we return.
