Dec 5, 2015 - Heathcote to Castlemaine
Overview Gaylene and I set off at 6am to get to our marshalling point 4km from camp at end of day. Nice riding through pleasant country side but we had to push it it get there in time. Only brief stop at the rest area and lunch area. David L caught up and rode with us for awhile but we left him at his post in the rest area. The climbs were more serious but we made it to the location by just after 9am and only 2 riders passed us. We were at a busy intersection without any shade in mid 30s temperature for 7 hours. Rough going towards the end....Jump to full entry
Aug 31, 2014 - Visit to beck and Jared's farm
On the weekend we visited the new farm that Jackie's friends are buying in harcourt, near castlemaine . It's a beautiful property bordered on one side by high granite outcrops and mount Alexander national park behind them. All the kids had a great time running around, climbing trees, and among leaf boats to sail in the dam. Beck and jack and I climbed the rocks for a great view of the surrounding area.Jump to full entry
Aug 18, 2014 - Castlemaine
It's great to be seeing Jackie and the boys again. And really nice to be staying in a house during this winter weather! Jackies house is on the edge of town and the next street backs onto the Victorian goldfields steam train line, along which an historic heritage steam train runs on Wednesdays and Sundays. I definitely plan to check it out.... Authentic wooden body carriages complete with pressed metal ceilings and polished interior woodwork- they even have a " parlour car" !! The tracks next to this rail line are a great place for the kids...Jump to full entry
Sep 2, 2011 - Last Post From The Mainland.
Hi, Here we are on our last night. Yesterday we walked into Castlemaine and walked and walked and walked until we were pooped. Today we went to Jayco in Bendigo to see why we have difficulty filling the water tanks. Were given a very easy solution - what a shame that Kings did not know (or maybe did not want to give us) this handy hint. Took less than 15 minutes to fill the tanks - a lot quicker than the 1.5 - 2 hours we have been taking!! We also looked around the Jayco shop and were amazed at what you can buy - mainly for repairs. We...Jump to full entry
Aug 31, 2011 - Nearly Time To Pack Up For The Last Time.
Hi, In my last post I forgot to tell you that at one of the garage sales I discovered unwittingly that I have amazing bartering skills. I have always thought I am hopeless at bartering and Diana you would be proud of me! I was choosing some old books for the shop and asked the guy how much and he said one dollar for each book. I was so surprised at the cheapness that my really? made me sound amazed (which I was and I thought oh no I have given the game away!). He then said ok $10 for the box. Again I was surprised and asked if he was sure...Jump to full entry
Aug 28, 2011 - Busy Few Days.
Hi, We are having a slower day today after the last four days. We have lots of goodies in the car for the shop and have visited lots of villages and driven along lots of country lanes - lots and lots of busyness!! We loved Maldon (always do) and also Newstead. Chatted to a lovely lady in a shop and she told us it's history and the history of the attached cottage which she lives in. We found a little place called Talbot and the two shops only open on the weekends - the place was deserted. We went in to the general store which is attached to...Jump to full entry
Aug 25, 2011 - Last Stop - Castlemaine.
Hi, We did stay at Deniliquin for only one night - we were so close to Victoria we both felt that we would like to keep going. We stopped at Echuca for a loaf of 96 hour sour dough bread - yummmmmmmy and a good coffee. Then in next to no time we were at Bendigo, which seemed very noisy and busy, so we kept on going to Castlemaine. We have set up camp and plan to stay here until a week on Saturday - but of course that can change at any time! We are up on a high bank overlooking the botanical gardens with a babbling brook just below us - so...Jump to full entry
