Aug 27, 2016 - Cloncurry to Winton

Up the Centre 26.8.16 Cloncurry to Winton The country on the road today has mostly been very flat, seeing far into the distance, and lovely and green, as there has been rain recently. However, a lot of the green is not grass, and we often wonder if animals eat a lot of these other plants. Most of the creeks and rivers are full at the moment. Walked around the town, we have been here before so didn't go to the museum in the town. 27.8.16 Winton We hadn't been out to the two dinosaur areas before, so a very early rise as we had a 110km drive...

Jun 26, 2016 - DAY 64

Day 64 Yes I said that it rained we had 200 points over night , where we were camped we had lawn and mud, the mud squelched between your toes and was slippery as hell. Had to wait till the camper dried out, up here when the sun comes out and a breeze the camper dried enough for us to drop it and we left by 11am. Another rather boring drive down till 5ks out of Winton we ran out of petrol so pulled off to the side (WRONG) as we tried to get back onto the road we had great difficulty as the mud you could do pottery with as it was so gooey....

RUSSANDY 2016

May 2, 2016 - Julia Creek

Took dogs for walk/run before breakfast, then drove into town to the Information Centre. It is an excellent centre to visit and has a fat tailed dunnart on display. We were just in time to see him being fed and have a run around. He is a very cute marsupial mouse like creature with pointy ears and stripe down his nose. Because it was still very hot (about 38°C) quite a few from the camp site went and had a swim up at the pool in the afternoon which was really refreshing and enjoyable. Then at 5.30 pm local bus came and picked up just about...

Apr 29, 2016 - Richmond

Took dogs for another walk up to the tourist information, and did a bit of shopping and browsing in shops after doing some washing. As it was a very hot day, we spent most of it trying to stay cool at our camp. I went for a swim at the local pool at about 2.30 pm (very refreshing!), then Ian and I drove out to the fossil hunting site for some fossil hunting. We were the only people there and as it was like a great big quarry, Ruby and Chilli had a fabulous time running and exploring as well as splashing through the water in the bottom of...

Winton-Dinosaur capital of Australia or is it fly capital of Australia!!! A very busy day today! We started out by watching the Anzac day street march in Winton before taking the dogs to a dog sitter for the day. The owners of the caravan park recommended her and she was really well set up for dogs despite having about 8 great danes to look after already! She rescues great danes as well as provide rooms for the vet to work from when he/she visits Winton. Our first stop was the Australian Age of Dinosaurs museum just wow! It is about 10k...

Apr 24, 2016 - Longreach to Winton

Drive from Lonreach to Winton - country generally dry and flat. Some more greeness and water around when nearly to Winton as compared to Longreach. Winton had good rains early in the wet season, but Longreach generally missed out. Road very different than 42 years ago in 1974 when I was on a Central Australian tour. It rained and rained the night we were in Winton, then because the road was still dirt road back then, the bus got bogged almost immediately. We had road trains try and tow us through individual bog holes, but we ended up camped...

Nov 3, 2015 - Wednesday Nov 4th Winton

Wednesday Nov 4 th……..Winton Nice night in Alpha, cooled down soon enough for a comfortable sleep. . We’re almost civilised now, watched a movie on dvd on the laptop last night. Had all the blinds open this morning so the sun was peeking in at about 5.30, enough sleep so up and at ‘em. Not a lot of travellers through here, only permanents in the park, left Alpha 7ish, bound for Barcaldine. Passed through Jericho, small place but you cross the railway line 3 times through here. Approaching Barcaldine, there’s evidence of some recent rain, a...

Had a lovely few days back in Winton. very sad indeed to see the burnt out ruins of the wonderful Waltzing Matilda Museum. It was the only Museum in the world dedicated to a Song and was totally destroyed by a fire earlier this year. Hopes are that rebuilding will be completed by 2017. so glad we spent hours in it in 2011. Stayed at the Tatts Hotel Van Park, right on the main street - a lovely park. Spent our two days in town at the two Dinosaur attractions. So many dinosaur remains have been found in this area over the years. Visited Lark...

Jul 10, 2015 - Day 13 - 15 / Winton

198 kms today, into a headwind was not good for fuel economy. We had thought to camp at the North Gregory Hotel van park, for $10/night with shower & toilet but when we arrived there they had a gem stone market (mainly Boulder opal), going for the weekend in the van area so, we went out to Long Waterhole and found a pleasant spot looking down over the waterhole to setup, camp. We have our toilet tent up - all we lack is a shower and we have discovered that we can shower at the BP servo in town (only 2kms away) for free. All the water in...

Oct 22, 2014 - Winton

One thing I forgot to mention yesterday: the road from Hughenden to Winton is incredibly undulating. If you're prone to motion sickness you'd almost certainly get it on that road. So I'm going along, bobbing up and down, up and down and suddenly remembered that i had filled with water the large plastic tumbler with screw lid and straw (that Cheryl gave me) in order to put it into the car for use while travelling. And had left it in the van. OMG it will have fallen on the floor and broken and water will be everywhere, or worse, it will have...

Oct 6, 2014 - Waltzing Matilda country

It seems that today is a public holiday so things were quiet but we went to the fruit and veggie store, expensive but all local produce. Then had a drive through the town to the Visitor and Waltzing Matilda Centre. The display started with a very well presented show depicting the story of Waltzing Matilda. Looking through the displays you could listen to just about every version of Waltzing Matilda that has ever been made. They also told the stories of the early settlers and pioneers. A theatre presentation of opals, then outside to see a...

Sep 11, 2014 - Winton

It was sad to leave Richmond, and that gorgeous Murphy! From Richmond we headed south to Winton - the road was sealed for part of the way and then dirt, but it saved us from going back to Hughenden and down from there. It was a bit hard going, nowhere to stop, red dust and hot. Fortunately we got there in time to go to the Winton Dinosaur museum tour. The building is out of town about 15km up on a hill which had great views. Part of the tour took us through how they extracted the fossils from a dig and how they worked on them. We had seen...
