Feb 26, 2013 - Days 116 - 118 … Itaúnas.
We woke early today because it was going to be a long Drive Day, but it turned out to be a dark day for Paul … he was very quiet and withdrawn from the group through breakfast, and when I sidled-up to ask if he was OK all he wanted to do was go home … I gave him a little cuddle, but I had to go and pack down the kitchen and so he took himself off with his headphones for a little ‘alone time’ while we loaded the truck. I went to get him as we started getting on the truck, and he had a little cry into my shoulder … we all have days like this...Jump to full entry
Feb 26, 2013 - Days 114 - 115 … Ouro Preto.
We rolled out of Teresopolis around 7:30am … stopped on the side of the road not far from Congonhas for lunch around 1pm’ish – Mel prepared lunch again, but also announced the new Cook Groups and they competed for order so from tonight they will begin to dazzle our tastebuds with their own culinary delights. After lunch it was only a short drive to Congonhas where we had the opportunity to explore a little church on the top of the hill. Narrow streets made it a very ‘interesting’ drive for Franco to get Frida up there for us, and once there...Jump to full entry
Feb 26, 2013 - Days 119 - 120 … Prado.
We rolled out of Itaúnas around 7:45am’ish for what was supposed to be a short Drive Day to Caravelas for Diving and Snorkelling … we were supposed to stay here for 2 nights to allow those interested in the aquatic activities a chance to do them, but Mel found out after we arrived here that the total cost to do the snorkelling would be around R300.00pp – diving would be more expensive – and participants would need to travel around 3 hours each way there and back – and probably the biggest impact was that it was expected that under water...Jump to full entry
Feb 20, 2013 - Days 105 - 111 … Rio de Janeiro.
It was only a short drive from Paraty to Rio but we left early all the same. We loaded up Frida and were on the road by 7am, beating the ‘B’ Truck so we would arrive in Rio first and Mel could sort out the Hostel … Oasis have not used the Art Hostel before, and with Mel being the more experienced Tour Leader between both trucks it was considered better that we arrive first so things might happen a little more smoothly. We stopped at a servo about an hour or so outside Rio so we could all sort our stuff and get our bags out of our lockers –...Jump to full entry
Feb 11, 2013 - Rio de Janiero - Carnaval - Sambadrome ...
Well last night was our night at the Sambadrome for Carnaval here in very sunny Rio de Janiero ... WOW! This is something Paul has been dreaming of doing for so long, and we are finally here and living the experience ... WOW again !! We have been in Rio for two-and-a-half days now (arrived Thursday PM and today is Sunday) - We did manage to buy most of the stuff we needed in Foz, but spent Thursday PM hitting the streets looking for the final items required - Friday we wandered around with Jess looking for stuff for her, and ended up...Jump to full entry
Feb 9, 2013 - Days 103 & 104 … Paraty
It was only a short drive from Ubatuba to Paraty – about 2 hours or so to be exact! The focus for being here is to have a ‘Snorkel Cruise’ … also affectionately referred to as the ‘Booze Cruise’. Of course we are also planning to surprise our fearless leader – Mama Mel – with a birthday celebration for her … her actual birthday is the day we roll out of Rio, but we thought an early celebration was appropriate so that the party could be enjoyed by all of us that have been on the truck with her for so many weeks now. My first thought was to...Jump to full entry
Feb 7, 2013 - Days 98 & 99 … Bonito
We left Santa Clara in the Pantanals around 8am and made our way to Bonito. The focus for coming here – as far as I can tell – is for the snorkelling and/or diving. The Rio de Prata has reputation for having the clearest water in the world to snorkel in … apparently. We arrived around mid-afternoon or so (not a very long drive day at all – about 90 mins transfer out of the Pantanals, about 90 mins drive back to Miranda, and then about 3 hours’ drive to Bonito) and after setting up tents and dropping in some laundry most of us found the bar...Jump to full entry
Feb 7, 2013 - Days 100 – 102 … Ubatuba
So, our drive from Bonito to Ubatuba was supposed to be at least 2-and-a-half days … but we made really good time on the first day and got reasonably further than we expected, so the suggestion was made to see if we could put in another monster drive day tomorrow and hopefully make it to Ubatuba in 2 days … Challenge accepted, and Franco was unstoppable behind the wheel – we arrived in Ubatuba around 8pm’ish (half a day early), and as a surprise for us Mel had arranged Hostel Accommodation for us if we wanted it … sweet Mel – always...Jump to full entry
Feb 1, 2013 - Days 91 - 93 … Foz do Iguazu – Brazil.
Our first Free Day in Foz (Day 91) we decided to go see the Brazilian side of the falls and while we were out there we did the Bird Park as well. Entry to the Argentinian side of the falls was an included activity – the Brazilian side of the falls was optional, so it cost us 41.50 Reals (or about $20.75 AUD) each but it was so very worth it. I know I have already made an entire entry about the falls – and covered both sides in that entry – so I won’t go on and on again here, but suffice to say it was AWESOME! Or to use a local colloquial...Jump to full entry
Feb 1, 2013 - Days 94 - 97 … The Pantanals.
We left Foz around 8am and looked directly down the barrel of a long Drive Day to get to the Pantanals … it took us a day-and-a-half to get to the Pantanals - we had a bush camp at the end of our first Drive Day - our second Drive Day was short’ish and we found ourselves at Pousada Santa Clara by about mid-afternoon. We were in dorm accommodation – and we bunked with David & Gwen and Paul (the Scot) – and after we settled in we had a free afternoon to get acquainted with our new surroundings. The Pousada (hostel/camp) Santa Clara was...Jump to full entry
Jan 24, 2013 - Iguazu Falls – One of the 7 Natural Wonders of the World!
Iguazu Falls is such an amazingly awesome experience I felt it deserved its own entry! I truly believe that no words or picture can do this Natural Wonder any justice – you NEED to SEE IT IN PERSON to completely appreciate the beauty and power of this miracle of nature. Having said that I will try my best to convey the feeling of our experience through the words and pictures in this entry, but please understand that however you feel about these falls – after reading this post – will only pale in comparison to your own experience after you...Jump to full entry
Jan 24, 2013 - Days 88 - 90 … Peurto Iguazu - Argentina.
Leaving Buenos Aires was one of the saddest days we have had so far on this trip … we just love B.A. and we promise to return one day. However, leave we must and to soften the blow we stared back-to-back Drive Days in the face. The first Drive Day seemed very long – we drove, and drove, and drove … but thank heavens for small mercies – I had the most brilliant ides for Carnivale Costumes! Occasionally on long Drive Days I have an epiphany, and this was one of those days … I’m very excited about my idea, but I will not disclose until I know...Jump to full entry
