Apr 4, 2013 - My Personal Reflection, by Tony.
We were all excited in preparation … we were wide-eyed like kids-in-a-lolly-shop while on trip … we were gutted by responsibility to end our trip early … and now we are home … so, how do I feel? This trip came into being through a series of events, much like the planets aligning. I decided long ago that any inheritance I got on the passing of my parents would take us travelling to make some happy memories in reflection of my childhood and family life while growing up … then Mel & Franco told us that Oasis had released this awesome South...Jump to full entry
Apr 4, 2013 - (1 x taxi) + (4 x flights) = Home!
So the time has come and our Journey Home begins. We are all packed, and for all our worries about Baggage Allowance we should be under … so with our packs in the Hostel Luggage Storage room we were off for our last dinner with our new friends to say our final goodbyes, up at the same place we ate last night - Marilyn, May, Paul (the Scot) and Jamie on our table, and Bob, Arnold and Johnno pulled up on the table beside us. We all seemed to arrive at slightly different times, and so all our orders were taken separately, and so all our meals...Jump to full entry
Mar 31, 2013 - Days 152 – 157 … Manaus.
Our last day on the Rondonia was much the same as any other day on the boat, but as the day drew on excitement mounted about arriving into Manaus and what that might bring. We packed up all our stuff by about 3pm, but left our hammocks up ‘just in case’ … in the end, all went pretty much to plan and although we arrived later than scheduled we didn’t need to stay on board overnight. Docking seemed to take forever and so by the time we were able to get off the boat – and then sort transport to the hostel – and then actually get to our hostel,...Jump to full entry
Mar 26, 2013 - Days 146 – 151 … N.M. Rondonia – our Amazon River Boat.
Today was our last day in Belem and our first night on the Amazon River. The plan was for those of us sleeping in hammocks on the boat to head to the dock at 1pm with Franco so that we could be close to the front of the line and thusly able to secure good positions for our hammocks for the next 5 days, and those who up-graded to cabins would follow with Mel at 3pm with the rest of our collective ‘stuff’ and join the end of the line in preparation for boarding at 4pm and sailing at 6pm … of course, any of you reading this who have caught...Jump to full entry
Mar 26, 2013 - Days 140 – 145 … Belem.
Today was the first Drive Day on the road to Belem from Palmas … the distance was only around 1,300km but Mel and Franco wanted to spend some time getting there so they could show us all some ‘real’ Brazil – off the beaten track so to speak – so they broke the distance into four Drive Days. We left the farm at Taquaruçu around 9am’ish so that we could drop the “Upgrade Boys” at the Bus Station so they could ‘Overnight Bus’ to Belem, and then continued out of Palmas over the ‘Bridge of Friendship’ and drove for a few hours. We had lunch on...Jump to full entry
Mar 17, 2013 - Days 137 - 139 … Palmas & Taquaruçu.
We rolled out of Natividade around 8am’ish for a short’ish drive to Palmas. Palmas is only a young city – designed and built in the 1980’s, and probably because of that it looks very modern in comparison to the other Brazilian Cities we have been to. We arrived in Palmas around 11am’ish and proceeded to experience an ‘Impromptu City Tour’ while Franco tried to find the Tourist Information Office … we saw some streets a couple of times on this tour, but Franco did end up finding a friendly gentleman who not only had connection to the...Jump to full entry
Mar 17, 2013 - Days 134 – 136 … Natividade.
Today is the day we roll out of Lencois, and Mel & Franco know that it will take more than 1 day to drive to Natividade but not quite 2, so we didn’t leave Lencois until 1:00pm … more free time in a small place – quaint, but small – with not much to do but sit around … so we took our time over breakfast and packing up the kitchen and tents … took a leisurely shower and changed clothes … then wandered to get some lunch at the lovely little Florentine Italian Restaurant we found yesterday (Trattoria Bell Italia) … and then back to Frida in...Jump to full entry
Mar 11, 2013 - Days 131 – 133… Lencois.
We were all ready and set to leave Salvador by 8am today, but that didn’t happen … as we were all loading our packs back onto Frida, Franco went to pay our Parking Account and the Parking Attendant wanted to charge him an amount twice as much as what the Toucan Truck was charged only 2 weeks ago! We were parked up in the same place – and for the same period of time – but all of a sudden it was going to cost twice as much? … Franco didn’t think so … so there was some vigorous discussion between them – the Parking Manager was called in –...Jump to full entry
Mar 4, 2013 - Days 126 – 130 … Salvador.
We drove out of Porto Seguro around 8am - we were some minutes early again (with reference to the Time of Departure as declared by Mel last night) - and we almost left Paul’s towel and a pair of shorts behind … there is a reasonable story behind this, but to protect the innocent I will merely say that they weren’t quite dry when we loaded our stuff onto the truck before breakfast so I hung them on the pool fencing until we left, and alerted Paul to where they were. I figured either or both of us would see them as we climbed on the truck to...Jump to full entry
Feb 27, 2013 - Days 123 - 125 … Porto Seguro.
We only had a short drive today and so Mel let us sleep in and we didn’t leave Caraiva until the 11:30am boat … very relaxed way to start our day. The drive turned out to be only about 3 hours or so and we found ourselves in Porto Seguro by around 3pm’ish … found our campsite – set up tents – took over a small area in the provided kitchen – and found ourselves sitting around chatting over internet and beer before too long. After dinner some of the boys on the truck went into town to find the ‘Night Life’ of Porto Seguro, but we decided to...Jump to full entry
Feb 26, 2013 - Days 121 - 122 … Caraiva.
We drove out of Prado around 8am’ish – fairly standard for this group – and drove a few hours to our next destination. We were headed for Caraiva – a beautiful little beach town that was accessible by boat only (unless you swam over I guess), and all transport in town was by foot or Donkey Drawn Taxi … there were no cars at all. We parked Frida up for 2 nights in a Secure Park just uphill from the Row Boat Dock and set sail for tranquillity and serenity! We arrived in ‘Town’ around 1pm or so, and were in our accommodation by around 2pm or...Jump to full entry
Feb 26, 2013 - Days 112 - 113 … Teresopolis.
We drove out of Rio at 8am – in hopes of missing all the morning traffic, but the question really is ‘Does the traffic ever really stop in Rio?’ because we still had a small job getting out. I do have to say at this point though – I believe it was a sadder day for me when we drove out of Buenos Aires than it was driving out of Rio de Janeiro today … I enjoyed my time in both cities, but I think I preferred Buenos Aires over Rio. Franco was very happy because not only does the REAL ADVENTURE start today, but he finally got to drive out of...Jump to full entry
