Mar 27, 2017 - Lightning Ridge to St George

It was another hot day so we were packed up and on the road just before 10am. The air conditioning in the car was a godsend! We crossed the border back into Queensland at Hebel- which is about 60k from Lightning Ridge, then drove through Dirranbandi before reaching St George about lunchtime. There has obviously been quite a lot of rain around St George as there is a lot of long green grass everywhere. I think cotton harvesting must be just about finished, but we did see some trucks loaded with cotton bales. We stopped by the river in St...

Oct 18, 2016 - Lightning Ridge sculptures and St George

Caravan park allowed us to stay at the park until after our tour - lovely people and a lovely park. We caught the bus out to the Black Hand Mine - a set of old tin sheds on the edge of town. Down 84 steps into a spectacular space - 450 odd sculptures and paintings in the stone of the mine. Magnificent and all by an English man who came to Lightning Ridge as a miner and decided to do some carvings in the mine - self taught and has got better and better as he has got older. We then went to the John Murray art gallery and purchased a couple of...

Sep 19, 2016 - St George

A lovely sunny day for a change although there’s still more rain forecast tomorrow. I spent a lot of time researching the weather & road situation trying to decide which direction I should go in, even considering going back north if necessary but they all look as bad as each other. Lots of rain & road closures out west, even as far north as Longreach so no good going that way so it has to be south. I went into town after lunch to the Unique Egg which is the work of one man over the last 60 years. He’s a Greek immigrant who came here after...

Sep 18, 2016 - St George

The day didn't start well at all but it did improve slightly as it went on. To start with, it rained all night & was still raining this morning. The caravan park was pretty waterlogged when I got here yesterday & now it's just a mess. Then my computer decided to stop working, which was a major problem because everything I'd planned to do on this rainy day involved the computer. I'd had the same problem last year but we diagnosed a failing hard drive so when I replaced that, I thought I'd solved the problem. Obviously not. I had to power it...

Sep 17, 2016 - Roma to St George

A brief respite from the rain this morning so I packed up while things were dry & headed 200 km south to St George. I got here before lunch so had time to set up & have a look around town. The rain started again about 8:00 pm & it rained continuously but not heavily all night.

Sep 14, 2016 - St. George - cold and wet!

15/9/2016 Thursday. St. George It has rained non-stop today, but we've made the best of it. First stop was Centrelink - interesting and successful! We went to the Info Centre, and the road to Cunnamulla has water over it, but at the moment, that's all. We'll check in the morning before we leave for Lightning Ridge. Coffee at the bakery, and then we drove to Nindigully to see the First Pub in Queensland, also renowned for it's huge hamburgers, which take about an hour to make/prepare/cook, but feeds anywhere between 6 and 10 people, for a...

Sep 14, 2016 - Meandarra to St. George

14/9/2016 Wednesday. Meandarra to St. George Yes! Another early day on the road for the Bullochs - 8.30am! After the chap told us last night about the expected rain and flooding, and as we'd only had light rain during the night, we checked the weather radar and expected conditions, and there is a lot of rain coming through from the west, so we thought it prudent to move on. All the roads were "Open", but not far down the road the water was very close to the edge. Bit worrying! This road was much better than the one we travelled on...

Homeless but happy

Oct 12, 2015 - St George

Monday 12 October 2015 The men were all up early to prepare for the day ahead. Breakfast at 7.30am and the men leave again to continue with the wheat harvest. Kent was hoping to start planting cotton, but with the forecast of showers for Tuesday and Wednesday (maybe), that had to be postponed for a few days. We made scones for morning tea, and the men all came back to join in, as Dot & Gary were leaving after that. (Seems the header had a bar failure at the opportune time)! Dot & Gary were heading off to Chinchilla to visit Gary's brother...

Oct 11, 2015 - St George

Sunday 11 October 2015 Rest day for the property, so the workers enjoy a bit of a sleep in! All ready on time to head into town for church at 9am. Every place is different, and we enjoyed the service and the hospitality of the country folk. We came home via the shops with John & Mavis for a few supplies, while Kent, Dot & Gary headed back to the house to start lunch preparations. A quiet afternoon at the house. The boys watched a bit of the Bathurst race on TV, some had a snooze and some read books. Liam headed off to Toowoomba before...

Oct 10, 2015 - St George

Saturday 10 October 2015 The day started early for Kent to meet the wheat truck. John, Don & Gary set off early too to turn the solar panels, and bring some machinery from the paddock back to the house ready to start harvesting the front paddock, and then we all had breakfast together about 8.30am. John took us for a drive to Jeff Moon's property to see his onion processing operation. A very enlightening visit to see the operation in action. From the growing stage to the production part where the outside loose skin is removed before the...

Oct 9, 2015 - Cunnamulla to St George

Friday 9 October 2015 Decided to be leave the caravan park about 9am and head into town. We had a good walk around Cunnamulla, a lovely town. Mavis found a nice skirt and blouse in the "sale." Tried to get a blouse for me, but only small or big sizes left! Had some morning tea before we left to head off to St George. Another hot day, and the landscape varied between barren and then some green patches. Back on Qld roads, and those familiar bumps!!! We stopped at Ballon for a picnic lunch on the bank of Wallenberg Creek. Lots of frivolities...

Sep 5, 2014 - St George

Friday 5 September At St George. Awoke early to start preparing to set off on our journey south. Don had a bad night with his knee, so after discussions on what we should do, everyone decided it was best for us to do a shorter trip. The trip to St George was enough to let us know that Don was not 100% fit to go ahead with original plans. John & Mavis headed off about 10am and will now travel to Sydney via Menindee, and catch up with their families there. We are having a quiet day here, and will set off tomorrow and head to Lightning Ridge....
