Mar 4, 2007 - The Whitsunday Islands & Skull & Cross-bones ARGH

Why are pirates called pirates??? Cos they ARGH he he :) Full of anticipation we got to the harbour at Airlie beach and made our to to the boat. There were 11 of us and then 8 crew, so it was pretty quiet. Needless to say it didn't take us long to find our feet and relax into the drinking for the next 3 days. The boat trip started off ok, but towards the end of the first night it got a bit choppy on the water. Nat felt sick and this is how she stayed for the next couple of days. She slept on the deck too as it stunk in the cabins of...

Feb 5, 2007 - Sailing Away around the Whitsundays

Friday 2nd February was a lot better weatherwise, I actually managed to walk down the main street of Airlie Beach without an umbrella! At 2pm I walked to Abel Point Marina with my bags of essential items for the trip, having left my main rucksack in storage at the OzSail offices. I saw a group of (obvious) backpackers and, making sure they were going on the same boat as me waited for a member of our crew to tell us what to do. We rented our stinger suits, as it is jellyfish season and part of the trip included free snorkelling as well as a...

Nov 20, 2006 - Sailing the Whitsunday Islands

Well, I arrived in Airlie Beach early in the morning and went for a walk down to the beach. I had been told of sailing trips run out from here around the Whitsunday Islands which I didn't think I would be able to afford to do but as soon as I saw the sea and the boats on it I decided that it had to be done and went and booked it before I changed my mind - managing by chance to get a fairly good last minute deal in the process. Next morning we left on the boat - an 83ft racing yacht bound for the islands and coral reef of the Whitsundays....

Sep 29, 2006 - Airlie Beach

25th September to 29th September Bowen to Airlie Beach (85km) After finally leaving Townsville (which took a while as we seemed to get stuck going in circles around the city) we headed for Bowen, a sleepy seaside town, ready for the big developers to move in and get building seafront apartments. We stayed in a campsite right on the beach and cycled along past 3 beautiful beaches, all pretty much empty despite it being school holidays here. I got attacked by magpies which dive bombed my helmet as I was cycling through some trees, apparently...

Aug 1, 2006 - Side trip to Whitsundays Islands

Everything from here on is commentary after being at home for almost 6 months. I remember a lot of it and have taken solid record of it in my journal but it will have less of the recent experience passion that the other entries had. My cruise of the Whitsundays Islands began by dropping off my gear at the booking office. At the office I met two girls who were also on the same ship so we walked to the wharf and then waited for the crew to let us on the ship. The ship is massive compared to the other tall ships in the wharf. There is a ton of...

Apr 23, 2006 - Airlie Beach and Diving According to Ben

Well, Aileen's started, and I'll finish. First things first: Aileen didn't really want to do the PADI. Not really. She wanted to sail around the Whitsunday Islands, not swim under it. But, fair play to her, she gave it her best shot. Condidering the grace and splendour of the Whitsundays, the gateway to it, Airlie Beach, is a real disappointment. It's a mess. But hey. Alas, the campsite was also a pigsty, with little or no lit walkways and washing facilities that left you dirtier when you left them than wehn you went in. Yes, we...

Feb 3, 2006 - Start of our sailing of the Whitsunday Islands

We got off the overnight bus and headed around to our hostel to leave our luggage there while we're away sailing. We then went and had some brekfast, checked in with Aussie Adventure sailing and got showered, etc, ready to go on our boat. We met our deckhand - Corey, who, incidentally, has the most annoying laugh on the planet - and boarded the Dreamcatcher. We got our stinger suits, met our Captain and the rest of our group and had a briefing before setting sail just after lunch time. The boat was pretty small, but quite comfortable and we...

Feb 3, 2006 - Sailing the Whitsundays!

We arrived in Airlie Beach at about 6.30am after a 15hour overnight bus journey. We left our bags off at the hostel we would be staying in after our boat trip and went to get our boarding passes for the boat. We had finished that by about 8am! After that we just walked about and I ended up buying a new bikini to replace the one that got stolen in Byron Bay and Kerry bought a hat. We were set for our boat trip. We had to be at the Harbour for 1.30pm and we set sail shortly after. We didn't do much the first day apart from sail to our...

Jan 31, 2006 - Glad "Tidings" in the Whitsundays

Oh my God - Kristine went diving! I really thought she wouldn't do it, partly because having done it in 1995, I know how technical it is and it was freaking me out more than it was freaking her out! The free introductory dive came with our Whitsunday sailing trip, so it was part of the deal, and she decided she wanted to go. Being the chicken that I am I didn't go, but the high blood pressure thing gave me a good excuse anyway because the instructors won't take you down. So, I just snorkelled above them all... The Whitsunday trip was just...

Oct 24, 2005 - Sailing on the Whitsunday Islands

Up at 6.30am to go sailing took the '10 min' walk (more like 30 min) to the harbour where we boarded the Alexander Stuart Tall Ship - loads of couples on the trip which meant we had a good group to get on with whilst away for the 3 days. We headed to Hook Island, the second largest of the Whitsundays with some of the best diving/snorkelling but as we anchored for a snorkel dark clouds appeared as a storm loomed ahead. We set sail for cover from the tropical storm but moved into the centre of it - crew got us to a cove where we anchored up...
