Aug 29, 2016 - Mt Barney

Monday 29th August Mt Barney scenic ridge Today we had a lovely drive around the scenic rim which is so aptly named. We drove up to the Mt Barney Reserve Camp Grounds. There are quite a lot of children camping out here on a school trip and we could hear them laughing as they tried to set up their tents. We had a picnic lunch beside a rippling creek and watching the water run over the rocks was just so peaceful. We weren't tempted to try the water as I am sure it would have been freezing. We then went for a drive to Boonah and wandered around...

Aug 28, 2016 - Tamrookin

Sunday 28th August Tamrookin Historical Church Today we drove into Beaudesert and went to the Baptist church for their morning service which we found to be very good. On the way home we stopped at the historical Anglican church at Tamrookin which is privately owned by a family trust. Thanks to the caretaker who saw us walking around the grounds we were able to look inside which is all cedar and black bean timber and just lovely and although it is 101 years old it has been kept beautifully. 180 degree majestic view of the mountains and...

Aug 27, 2016 - Saturday Tree climbing competition

My Trip Journal 27th August Another cold but beautiful morning and it soon warmed up as we went up and shouted ourselves an egg and bacon roll from the food van which is here to serve all the arborists here for the Queensland Arborist competition. There are all sorts of exercises and competitions including speed climbing, a simulated rescue of an injured person from a tree and one climbing exercise which is one of strategy where a climber has to reach designated points on one or sometimes two adjourning trees, and ring a bell when that...

Aug 27, 2016 - at Bigriggen - QAA comp completes

Saturday 27th Aug at Biggriggen We weren’t up too early this morning and had decided yesterday to have a brekkie burger from the stand selling them over two days. We almost missed out. The lady informed us that she had closed up because she had sold out of food. However she found just enough to make us bacon and egg burgers but she only had hot-dog rolls. Thats fine we said. We were too hungry to care. They were beautiful. Today is the final day for the QAA (Qld Aboricultural Assoc) competition. First up we watched the Speed Climb up a...

Aug 25, 2016 - Visit 4Real Dairy

25th August Our Trip Awoke to a beautiful morning and the sun is out but the wind is rather icy. Lots of kangaroos around and of course the ever vigilant Kookaburra. It is a lovely lush green property and not at all crowded. No one camping close by and lots of fire pits around for our use. It was lovely to sleep last night listening to the river running fast beside us. We went to the Scenic Rim Robotic Dairy . ( for family this is owned by Brenda Dennis, who is Uncle Don Cooper's niece. She was Brenda Garton before being married.) It was...

Aug 25, 2016 - at Bigriggen - and '4Real' Robotic Dairy

Thursday 25th Aug at Bigriggen - and Tamrookum (dairy) Today has dawned sunny without a cloud. Very beautiful. This morning we have a booking for the “4Real” Robotic Dairy tour. 4Real is a brand of milk farmed, robotically milked, and then bottled all on site before distribution direct to the retail outlets. We scampered to get to Tamrookum on time, just making it. The talk by Greg Dennis was extremely interesting - informing us how the robot milker worked, and how they had trained the cows to accept it, and accept that they were regularly...

Aug 24, 2016 - at Bigriggen - rain today

Wednesday 24th Aug at Bigriggen - joined by RnH The rain has been heavy at times but continuous right through the night and up to lunchtime. The creek (actually Logan River) behind us has changed through the night from being a gently running stream to a raging flood torrent. We couldn’t see the creek from our van yesterday as it was so low, but this morning we have no trouble with it being swollen a couple of metres higher. Anyone want to join the Gibsons with their great reputation for ‘holidays’ linked with ‘rain’. RnH arrived late...

Aug 24, 2016 - Down Rathdowney way

24th August Our Trip We headed off about 10am and couldn't believe how warm it was when we were doing the last minute packing. A good run to start off with and before long the dark clouds gathered and it rained consistently for the rest of the journey. By the time we arrived at Bigriggin it was cold and very wet and we were amazed to see the Logan river broken its banks and raging at a rate we have never seen before. Even parts of the road covered with very shallow water and across a low lying bridge at the turn to the property. They said...

Aug 23, 2016 - at Bigriggen

Tuesday 23rd Aug at Bigriggen Had a fair few hours of light rain overnight and this morning was quite foggy. Ron fetched water from the community tank for washing up etc, then hooked up the solar panel to provide some support to the caravan battery. Unfortunately it is was fully clouded over when we went into Rathdowney to update the blog and check emails. Jan was most impressed by the quality of the manned Information Centre. It had a large number of gifts for sale and a comprehensive range of literature on The Scenic Rim area. While we...

Aug 22, 2016 - Arana Hills to Bigriggen (near Rathdowney)

Monday 22nd Aug - Brisbane to Rathdowney We have a destination for today. We haven’t been there before so it holds excitement for us as we try out a new campground. ‘BIGRIGGEN’ is a private property campground situated 9km from Rathdowney in SE Qld. Should only be a bit over 1 and half hours so dropped in on Ron’s brother and sister-in-law who live at Booval in Ipswich. Great excuse for a cuppa and a chin-wag. At present they have their eldest grandchild staying with them - Kira, who was eagerly waiting for confirmation in the mail to give...

Oct 31, 2015 - To Rathdowney

Saturday 31st to Rathdowney ..long day 83k..didn’t record ride time but prob more than 4hr:30. Pete’s mattress again went flat overnight…at least though the night was v quiet and cooler about 12C, so sleep was more comfortable at about 860m here. Pete made another repair to the same faulty seam and we wheeled out of camp at about 9:15 after getting some route info from the v helpful lady camp/shop owner. About 17C and much of the road shaded by trees, rain forest here, palms, vines choking trees, ladder ferns, many butterflies, 50 shades of...
