Jun 18, 2016 - Proserpine and beyond then back again

18/6/2016 Saturday We have had the absolute best day today! Firstly, we had a look around the town of Proserpine, then drove to Airlie Beach, arriving just in time to have a quick wander around the market, which was starting to wind down. We then went to Shute Harbour, which used to be the departure point for the passenger boats to the Whitsundays, but that has now been moved to Airlie Beach, and Shute Harbour is used mostly by local fishermen and the car ferry, and is deserted and desolate. We had our picnic lunch sitting in the car...

Jun 17, 2016 - Townsville to Proserpine

17/6/2016 Friday We left Townsville at 9.30am in sunshine, and the good weather has been with us all day. We looked for a bakery in Ayr as we drove through, but didn't see one, so continued onto Home Hill, driving over the Burdekin Bridge, known as the Silver Link, which took 10 years to build and was opened in 1957. The absence of rock in the riverbed forced the construction team to sink huge concrete caissons to depths of over 30 metres. It's 1097m (3,600ft) long, 46m shorter than the Sydney Harbour Bridge, but longer than Brisbane's...

Nov 2, 2015 - Monday Nov 2nd

Monday Nov 2nd I hope by the end of this entry I have calmed down a bit. This will make more sense later. Another beautiful morning in Brandy Creek, we’ve eaten and packed, waved goodbye to Matt at about 8am. Only 15 minutes to Proserpine where we decide to do some laundry and have a capo in our favourite coffee shop….we’ve been here often enough to have a favourite. Google maps showed us exactly where the laundromat was so, easy peasy, chuck in the clothes and send off a couple of days blog while the machine does its thing. All done,...

Nov 1, 2015 - Sunday Nov 1st

Sunday Nov 1st Golf today so no time to waste, awake early, impossible to sleep in with the birdlife around here all competing to be first to greet the dawn. Matt was ready, so set off for Proserpine golf club about 6.30. Only a short drive of 15 minutes and we’re there. Bit of a concern….seems to be plenty of golfers milling around…so much for a quiet 9 holes. Tried to pay our fees, but the pro asked us to wait a few minutes so he could get the comp. underway. This can’t be good. Waited about 5 minutes and the guy says if we’re quick we...

Nov 1, 2015 - Saturday Oct 31st

Saturday Oct 31st Nice morning in Brandy Creek, even a bit of rain to keep things cool. Usual early breakfast, stayed down at the C/T not wanting to disturb Matt, but soon discovered he’s already been up and pulled an old fence down in preparation of a different location for his herd of (3) cows. Matt had a mate coming to help hime with an electric fence so Terri and I drove into Airlie for the Saturday markets. Some heavy rain around but soon disappeared. Usual stuff on offer at the markets,Terri bought a few trinkets, some fruit and...

Oct 30, 2015 - friday Oct 30th

Friday Oct 30th Seaforth camping ground has an abundance of birds like most places we’ve camped. Along with white ducks, brown ducks (who don’t quack but emit a shrill squeak) , the colourful parrots we encountered previously in Claireview and a group of resident Curlews (the bush thickknee). These big birds are not tame but bold and curious. Having our dinner last night in the soft glow of a small camp lantern there was always 1 or 2 standing like sentries close by just watching us. And all through the night they make this godawful...

Mar 9, 2007 - Airlie Beach and the WhitSunday's

Well here I am in Airlie Beach - having heard the virtues of Airlie from Kate and Aaron who used to live here. I have to say that it is really pretty - probably a better choice than Cairnes. The entrance to Airlee is very dramatic - you drive through sugar cane fields and farm land and then drive over the brow of a hill to see the most beautiful bay. Airlee is a real holiday place - shute harbour road - where YHA is loacted, is the real party road - don't stay here to sleep!! Although, during the day things are pretty relaxed - a classic...

Mar 7, 2007 - Pics for you

Wow I've honestly been sitting at this internet cafe for 2 1/2 hours trying to download photos. It's already cost me $10 for absolutley nothing...so I cancelled it. I will have to try again later, but I can't sit here for any longer. Expecially since I was supposed to meet some girls at the lagoon about 2 hours ago. I promise I will try again later, when Kori gets home and can show me what I'm doing wrong. I will out them in the entry though, so I will email everyone when I've updated it. Also, I bought a cell phone yesterday, but it...

Feb 21, 2007 - The Barrier Reef and a farewell to Oz

All good things must come to an end and this old saying applies as much to our sojourn in Australia as anything else. We feel sad to be leaving this beautiful country and the wonderful people who have done so much to make our stay truly memorable. Our final excursion before leaving Oz for China was to be the Great Barrier Reef. We drove up to the Whitsunday Islands. These were named by, yes, you've guessed it, Capt Cook, when he sailed through on Whit Sunday June 1770. The further north we went the more tropical the landscape and, as this...

Jan 31, 2007 - Airlie beach

hi guys, after our extreme island adventure we have moved up the coast to Airlie beach, the jumping off point for the Whitsunday islands and some great barrier reef snorkeling. We have a few days in Airlie beach first before we head out to the Whitsundays and we did plan on spending at the beach but we have moved up into a tropical climate now and guess what, we are smack bang in the middle of the wet season! Its pouring down and the forecast does not look good for the next few days, hopefully it should become clearer by Saturday when we...

Jan 30, 2007 - Airlie Beach

The bus journey up here from Airlie was a good laugh. It was like 11 hours but we had fun. Its was Noels birthday as well. We played games on the bus and slept. I was bored so I woke everyone up and told them they have to keep me entertained.... What an arse.. :-). We met some quality people a few of which are still around now. We had a large night in Airlie for Noels Birthday. We agreed before we came away that on our birthdays we would each buy drinks for the other all night and buy a meal. Well it was my turn first. I spent $350 which is...
