Feb 27, 2010 - Port Douglas

A long leg of over 400km to Port Douglas. This is to be our furthest point north - some 3,800km after leaving Sydney three and half weeks ago. A few kms north of here the tarmac roads finish and only 4X4 vehicles are possible! At last the Pacific/Bruce Highway lives up to its name. The final 50km from Cairns to Port Douglas, now called the Captain Cook Highway, is superb hugging the coast line - miles of unspoilt beaches.

Oct 16, 2009 - The Daintree - part II

Today we spent the morning walking around Cape Tribulation, the afternoon swimming in Mossman Gorge, and the evening barbecuing in Port Douglas. All amazing places within an easy drive of each other. I think pictures will do better than any words I could use so I'll just let the pictures do the talking. Tomorrow we fly out to Melbourne where I suspect the weather will be a bit cooler.

Oct 8, 2009 - Out on the great barrier reef

This was such an incredible experience. I am not confident in the water but Penny & John towed me along with a "noodle" and I could not believe the beauty of the coral and the countless brightly coloured fish. The whole day with the boat journey and 3 stops to snorkel took 8 hrs and we finished the day with a Thai meal in Port Douglas. My first night sharing the caravan passed uneventfully ! I have also been spared the ravages of the sand flies which have made P & J so itchy. Kay The caravan park at Port Douglas was full of sand flies which...

Oct 7, 2009 - Kay's arrival day

I was panicking on the way to pick up Kay as we were running a bit late, but all was well and we got there in time. She has arrived in one piece and we have broken her in gradually. She had a short sleep as soon as she arrived and then we took her to visit friends up North of Port douglas who live in Daintree and run a passion fruit farm. It's all so amazingly different. The farm had fruit dropping from hundreds of vines as we walked under them and I saw mangoes, guavas and lychees on other trees. There were also ripe bananas and I had the...

Oct 1, 2009 - Family dinner

Well the family dinner went well and was very enjoyable especially as all the Carnaby girls decided to get stuck into the huge cocktails that were on offer. Close family was brothers and sisters and parents. As there are 6 Radford siblings and 4 Carnabys and mothers and stepmothers and fathers and stepfathers and parents girlsfriends this adds up to a substantial number. The Carnaby drinking and staying up late team was well and truly in their element and yet again the Radford's were no where to be seen except for Ben the bridegroom who is...

Sep 30, 2009 - Hen's party

The hen's party was held at a friends house. Lots of cocktail drinking and games went on and eeryone had a Thai massage by the pool. The guys went to the golf course and then into the Central pub in Port Douglas. Ben the bridegroom was shackled around the ankles and fell over on the way to the men's so the bouncers decided to kick the whole group out of the pub. This is because new management isn't too worried about patronage from the locals and wants to attract the tourists, so as you can image there were some strong words said and they...

Sep 29, 2009 - Port Douglas

Well we have arrived in Port Douglas and settled in the caravan park and now John''s first wife has set up right beside us so it's very nice and cosy. When John was married her name was Susan but a few years ago she had an epiphany and changed it to Lecoyah Sunset. John keeps forgetting it and now calls her Tequila Sunrise (not to her face though) I am looking forward to having a few chats with her and finding out a few more juicy bits about John's past.

Aug 4, 2009 - Port Douglas

Medusa and I set out for Port Douglas, a quaint little town where the retired and loaded rest up and enjoy there final years, Australia's very own God's Waiting Room. Next door to the town is Four Mile Beach and a mighty impressive beach it is too so I had to pay a visit. There is a designated swimming area marked by two flags and sensibly that's where everyone seemed to be swimming, and oddly the beach was devoid of any surfers. All that became clear when I had my first dip, the sun may be shining and the sky be clear and blue but my god...

Jul 2, 2009 - Port Douglas / Mossman Gorge

After a week at work (getting used to it slowly) we spent my first day off by driving up to Port Douglas. This is a beautiful little town - touristy by not over done. On our way in we stopped off at the Tree Tops resort where we were told Phil and Judy's son worked (these are friends of Sheena's family and funnily enough Ken has also known them for about 15 years as he built their kitchen and did a lot of work in their house). We had a lovely coffee beside an awesome pool at the resort but alas no Damien - he finished up a week ago! They...

Jun 9, 2009 - Day of diaries and journals ...getting ready for the big drive tomorrow

Today was a day of rest and catch up of our journals and diaries. Liam and Rhiannon drive Sean and I to despair. Sara and Miranda helped Sean clean the car both inside and out and then just played quietly. At 4pm we gave up and got the van ready for tomorrow as we are leaving as early as possible. We then went into the main street where I did a grocery shop at Coles and as I was lining up to pay Ashley bumped into us. We decided to have dinner at a pub for our last night together. The kids were exhausting and it did not make it an enjoyable...

Jun 8, 2009 - The Men go Hunting for dinner!!!

We had to be up at 6.30am to be outside Patrick and Ashley's hotel for the men and Liam to be collect at 7.50am. Ashley and I took the girls and Josh to breakfast and then down to the playground next to where the markets were. They played beautifully and even were sailing an imaginary ship to where we could not eavesdrop. We had a treat of icecreams before lunch and so were not too hungry for the latter!!! At 1pm we were back at their place and the hunters returned with their bounty. They had a swim where Liam was embarrassed by a topless...

Jun 7, 2009 - The Port Douglas Markets and Mossman Gorge

As all the fishing charters were booked out everyone went to the Port Douglas Markets. We tasted fresh cane juice, fresh grated coconut with honey and fresh pineapple juice. We bought lots of fresh fruit and veges and some other yummy foods. Sad to say the kids enjoyed the sno cones better than all the fresh, healthy foods we tried. We then had lunch back at Patrick and Ashley's place and then the kids and the men went for a swim in the pool. We finally went for a drive to Mossman's Gorge where we all except for Ashley, Rhiannon and Josh...
