Feb 18, 2013 - Meeting the kangaroos at Hillsborough

Rain again today accompanied by a severe weather warning. Regular updates on the radio, on our five hour drive from Yeppoon to Hillsborough National Park, say the weather is going to stay as it is for the next 48 hours. It poured all the way. We heard that it’s 30+ degrees in Melbourne, unbelievable. As we entered the resort we were greeted by a kangaroo hopping around. What a welcome. Our accommodation is very, very basic, but you don’t expect much more when you stay in this type of place. The wild life is what makes it so special. A few...

Oct 18, 2012 - Home to Mackay

I suppose we were happy enough to get home. We had a wonderful trip and enjoyed the experience of winter, and we arrived home unscathed. Our family in Mackay had worked hard cleaning up the yard and the house so it was a lovely surprise to come home to. I think Brayden and Kaylee were here "working" as well. I didn’t think we would be on the road so long. I thought 4 weeks would pull us up but Barry had given us 6 weeks. All up we were away 4 months but we totally enjoyed every single day. Watch this space for our next trip…..

Tuesday - Dee and I went to the cafe down the road to meet up with her mums community group today whilst marc did some maintainence on the car. Jas returned from an induction and the boys went for a 4wd up a crazy hill somewhere. Wednesday- After a relaxing morning we headed into the CBD for a look around. With not much to see we finished up at the local shopping centre where marc updated his wardrobe amazing trying shorts and a polo top on and coming out with three purchases to which I added he has brought more than me on holiday. He's...

Sep 30, 2012 - Day around Mackay

Boys got up and went for a swim to try and shake their hangovers. After a quiet morning we headed into town to do a few messages before taking joshiemoo and Nate for a swim at blue lagoon. It's really neat they have a heap of pools with slides and fun activities all for free entry, really well set up. I decide to venture in and show joshie the shower of water only to have him wail and need to make a quick exit unfortunately I forgot about the 400L bucket dump and let's just say joshie and I got a little wet!! Home to a yummy roast pork...

Jun 20, 2012 - Leaving home

We left home on 20th June 2012, heading south looking for winter. We don't know exactly where we will go or when we will return but we will be on the other end of the phone. Barry's mobile should have good coverage everywhere: 0427 007 876. Our first few nights in the van were at Chris and Shannon's house, also spent some time with Hayley and Ben. Hayley and her boyfriend Lachlan recently moved into a house and have become engaged.

Sep 14, 2011 - Mackay - Sep 14-21

Had a lovely few days in Mackay - weather was great. Took a trip out to Eungella, a town literally on the crest of a mountain at the head of the magnificent Pioneer Valley. Flat all the way until 4.5kms from the destination, then an incline of 12% with hairpin bends, switchbacks - yuk!! Suddenly, at the top, there is the little township. On to the Sky Window Lookout, where you can view the length of the Pioneer Valley to Mackay - mountains on three sides right down to the coast. Another day, we spent a wonderful couple of hours at...

Sep 9, 2011 - On the road again

On the road again and i must admit i'm out of practice of driving the road train.I always find after a few days off from driving long distances it takes us a few days to get back into the swing of things ,Yesterday i was stuffed after driving for 2 hours and needed a break and we stopped a few time along the coast. Today was so much better and the kms just melted away.We borrowed some audio books from Kay, so that helps take your mind of the drive Last night was spent at a really good free camp stop before townville, it had a basket ball...

Gormans Getaway

Jul 19, 2011 - NZ Blog Eleven - Mackay

Friday 15 July - Christchurch to Brisbane to Mackay The alarm duly rang at 4:20 and we were out of room, checked out and on the courtesy bus by 5:00 and soon checking in, or we did after we had re-arrange our luggage as we were a couple of kilo over our limit. The flight was on time and I think that the only spare seat was in our three seat pod so we were very grateful and the four hour flight was better than expected and we would have been early if Brisbane Airport had been able to let us land and didn’t have a bank up of planes. Through...

Jun 16, 2011 - Aus - Day 44 -Seaforth Beach & Rainbow Lorikeets

Awesome morning overlooking the beach. While I got breakfast ready Jason decided he would try and feed the ducks and little birds that were surrounding our van looking for some tasty bread. White headed ducks, brown ducks and the "priest" birds (that's what I call them) grouping up to eat the bread Jason was throwing to them. He bent down to see if any of them would come up and take it out of his hand when all of a sudden appearing from under the van to crawl up into Jason's hand and start eating the bread was a Rainbow Lorikeet. Astounded...

Jun 15, 2011 - Aus - Day 43 - Dawnie's Canadian Birthday

Woke up to Jason signing Happy Birthday to me. Made me breakfast and a coffee, cleaned up and headed off up the coast to Cape Hillsborough National Park to see the ocean and kangaroo's on the beach. Rugged, rainforest-clad hills plunge to rocky headlands of rhyolite boulders. The Yuibera Aboriginal people continue their traditional use of the rich natural resources found here. There are more than 150 species of birds and 25 species of tropical butterflies. What a beautiful warm sunny day. The scenic drive took us through sugar cane...

Jun 14, 2011 - Aus - Day 42 - Dawnie's Australian B-Day

Woke up this morning and headed straight to the mechanic to make sure they could take the van in today. They had a quick look and shortly found that the wobbling problem was due to a very slightly separated tyre (that's how tire is spelled here), they also checked out the rest of the front end and suggested replacing the top 2 ball joints and one front wheel bearing. I would have called bullshit, however they were good enough to bring me into the garage and inspect it all with me. We decided to replace all 4 tyres and do the front end work...

Jun 13, 2011 - Aus - Day 41- MacKay

Everything is pretty much closed for the holiday here - the Queens Birthday. We need to pick up some mail (van registration papers) from the post office and we need to get the van checked out as we now have a wobbling taking place as we drive. The transmission oil needs to be changed as well but Jason tried today to get the bolts off and they are stuck so we will need that done by a mechanic. Jason asked around and found a place we can take the van to in the am to see if they can get it in. Nice sunny day today, Jason made supper while I...
