Aug 18, 2016 - Laura

One of the changes since I was here last is that the road from here to Laura is now bitumen all the way. This was the main road to the Palmer River goldfields in the 1880s & was still a rough 4WD track in 2007. I had to backtrack on the road to Cairns for 80 km, then west for another 65 km so it was roughly a 300 km round-trip but all good road so a pleasant day’s drive mostly through what they call the dry tropics & plenty of banana plantations around Lakeland. The reason I went to Laura was that I’d heard there were some good Aboriginal...

Jun 11, 2016 - DAY 54/55

Day 54 Down into Weipa had a look around, did some shopping, Was going to enter Roll and the boys into the Weipa fishing comp but realised that it is a long weekend over here so they wouldn’t have time to get here, Had lunch and back on the road. Lots of road works being done and camped up at Archer River. Day 55 Same road and the road works we passed going up had been finished so now we have more bitumen, I’d say that about 30% of the road is bitumenised Camped at Palmer River again.

Day 49 Got car back about 11am but while packing up Russ cut his ankle on a star picket that the cover had come off so off to the hospital, They glued the cut together , he can still drive. Coming out we stopped at Quarantine Bay, lovely beach the sign said no swimming as crocks are about but this didn’t deter the darker locals. Stopped to look at the Black Mountain, this is quite a sight to see as you drive through them. Russ...

RUSSANDY 2016

Oct 28, 2014 - Laura - day trip from Cooktown

While staying at Graeme's we did a day trip to Laura that also took us to Lakefield National Park. We took the 4 wheel drive track north of Cooktown past Old Laura homestead to Laura (about 135kms) and then through Lakeland on the way back to Cooktown (140km of new sealed road). Lakeland is where a great deal of Queensland's bananas are now grown.

May 15, 2006 - Australian Rain forrests..

Here after cyclone Larry hit in March 06 there could be seen extensive damage to the sugar, banana, and rare fruit farms as well as many old rain forest trees snapped off and lots of roofs of homes blown off. Next to the wet rain forests they have dry rain forests..same basic plants grow but there is much less rain fall. The there is the Maui forest which is strictly a host forest no parasite plants only plants and ferns which use the trees as a host in return they protect the tree from predators. In the Maui forest..the third eco system...
