Feb 11, 2006 - Fraser Island, Australia

Welcome to Fraser Island, the world's largest sand island in the world! It is so large that it is ok to use the word "world" twice in that last sentence. What does it mean to be the largest "sand island" in the world? Exactly as it sounds, the entire island is sand, and it is the largest in the world.. No dirt, no rocks, no buried Las Vegas mobsters, ,just pure sand from start to finish. Actually there is a bit more on the island that just sand, but we will get to that in a minute. Fraser Island is roughly 130 kilometers long from tip to...

Feb 10, 2006 - Hervey Bay, Australia

Hervey Bay (pronounced "Harvey Bay" by the locals for some unknown reason) was a beautiful small beach town that we really, really liked. It is a sizable town in regards to population and there is a major city center, but it is all contained four or five blocks west of the coast line, or in other terms, away from the beach. The Aussies are good at not selling off their beaches to greedy land owning merchants or millionaires and instead have left the coast for all to enjoy. There is a 10 kilometere road that runs parallel with the water...

Feb 7, 2006 - Hervey Bay

I decided to stay in Hervey Bay for one night. It consisted of a beach and an esplanade full of shops. Nothing much there just another gateway to Fraser Island. Had a few drinks in the evening with a girl from Plymouth! And three Irish girls. Decided to move on the next day to meet Elaine (from Cork, Ireland) and Jana (Pronounced Yana from Germany) who I had met my last night in Rainbow.

Jan 29, 2006 - Hervey Bay

After our bus being delayed we were pretty rushed and ended up having a brief briefing from the hostel on fraser Island. We met the rest of our the group that we would we be spending our time in Fraser with and sorted out money for shopping. Catherine and I got nominated to do the shopping for the group which I thought would be fine but turned out to be the worst thing ever! we only had half an hour in a tiny corner shop to do all the food shopping for 11 people for 3days - not good! I am never having a big family anyway!

Jan 29, 2006 - Hervey Bay

This morning we got up and got packed, ready to get our bus at 12.30. We stood and waited for the bus until a girl from our hostel came out and informed us that it was delayed by 2 hours. We eventually got in to Hervey Bay after 5pm and got to our hostel, where they put on a late safety briefing about our self drive tour of Fraser Island for us since we had missed the first one. Basically: don't drive in the sea and stay away from dingoes. I would have thought that that was common sense, but then you never know what eejits are going to turn...

Jan 11, 2006 - OZ - Fraser Island

Fraser Island is about 70 miles long and about 5 miles wide. It's the largest "sand drift" island in the world. The only paved road on the island is the first 100 yards from the ferry, and then it's all sand. You can bring your own vehicle but it is 4x4 only, for obvious reasons! You can't really tell but our bus was more like a monster truck w/ a bus on top of it! We were actually the fastest vehicle on the island, passing Land Crusiers at 45 to 50 mph on the beach! We spent two days and one night on the island, saw plenty of beach and...

I have moved on!! I left Brisbane this morning after saying goodbye to Stacey as she left for Singapore/Thailand. It will almost be a little odd not being with her anymore, but it will be good to do my own thing for awhile and I will see her at Christmas!! I took the bus to Hervey Bay today, which is pretty much the gateway to Fraiser Island, the largest sand island in the world. I am doing my 4WD camping safari Saturday-Monday! Should be a blast. Although you can not swim in the ocean around the island(due to man eating sharks) there are...

Nov 6, 2005 - Fraser Island

The Safari Adventure The trip to Fraser Island certainly reached our expectations. Approximatley 25 people were split into three groups. Each group was given the appropriate camping supplies, a budget for food and a budget for alcohol. The situation was similar to one of those team building trips which are regularly organise by corporations, the only difference being a good location and a hot climate. All our equipment and supplies had to be loaded into the Toyota Land Cruiser 4x4 which could only be driven by people with a drivers license...

Nov 4, 2005 - Hervey Bay

Calm Before the Storm Hervey Bay is used as a spot to stay over night in preperation for the Trip to Fraser Island. Fraser Island is the largest sand Island in the world and the only place known where rain forest grows on sand. Fraser Island is a national park, home to wild life such as dingoes and lizards. We shall be touring the island in a group of 8 people using some kind of 4WD personnel carrier for 3 days. We hope we don't get placed with a bunch of goons. We're staying in a nice hostel just next to the beach. It is the first time we...

Oct 23, 2005 - Fraser Island

Fraser Island is the world's largest sand island (The Island is approximately 120km by 15km)and is situated just a 10 minute ferry journey from Rainbow Beach. There were a number of adventure tour companies offering organised trips around the island. The five of us however, decided it would be more fun to hire a 4WD and do it ourselves. We were advised to avoid swimmimg in the ocean as this particular area is subject to strong currents and equally as alarming, home to a number of man-eating sharks, including The Great White Shark. Despite...

Oct 22, 2005 - Fraser Island

My trip to fraser island was great, one of the best things I've done so far over here! We had a preliminary briefing on tuesday evening, met the other pepole of our group and got our itineraries for the tour. When it came to the Question "Who's over 21 and has had a drivers license for over two years" three hands went up, including mine. I thought "cool, so maybe I'll get a chance to drive for a while, too"... The next morning, when the car was all packend it turned out that I got a lot more than just a chance, as I ended up being the only...

Oct 19, 2005 - Fraser Island

I just spent the last 3 days on Fraser Island, this is definitely one of the best place I have ever been to in my entire life!!! Even though the weather was pretty crap we still had great time!!! The temperatures are usually hot during the day but then rains so heavily most nites... Fraser Island is the biggest sand island in the world, that's such a wonderfull place. there are absolutely no roads. You have to drive on the beach (when the tide is low) or on inland sand tracks (no very confortable for people seating in the back of the...
