Jul 29, 2014 - Day 2 - off to Hervery Bay

We left Brisbane around 8 am and headed to Gympie. The washers on the car had stopped working and we had arranged for Performax at Gympie (who we bought the Chevvy from) to fix them while we waited. This took about 1 1/2 hours so we had morning tea in the van and caught up on some reading. From Gympie we headed straight to Harvey bay and arrived at about 2 pm. We checked straight into the Fraser Lodge Big 4 caravan park at Torquay and set the van up for our 5 night stay. Had a walk along the Esplanade and watched a beautiful sunset. Went...

Jul 8, 2014 - Days 8 - 10 UPDATE NOTES

Hi All Well we've been away just over a week and not too much had happened, its been bloody cold at night and the winds have been cool as well during the day.Our 1st week at Maroochydore our van awning was facing the south so sitting outside was not an option. The last few days we have been at Hervey Bay and whilst our site is reasonable its well protected by trees, Barry's site is in the mulga, well overshadowed by trees so he just cannot sit outside and all the shade keeps the van cold and dark. Better days to come. Maroochydore was a...

May 25, 2014 - Hervey Bay, Queensland

Pomona was an overnight stop on the way to somewhere else. We stayed in the Pomona Showgrounds Caravan Park located, as the name implies, in the local showgrounds (in this case a small, local fairgrounds). What makes this little town special to us was finding a “Walk Pomona” brochure in the information centre. We spent a couple of hours following the self-guided tour looking at buildings (old and new) and learning a little bit about the town. At one point, we encountered a man trimming a yard, who came over to the fence to talk. Everywhere...

Mar 4, 2014 - The Fraser Coast

Ok, so a change to our plans. We had picked up a brochure on the Fraser Coast and found just what we wanted. A little island where turtles laid their eggs and manta ray might be seen, so decided to forgo Fraser Island and we booked three nights at Lady Elliot Island. We set off for the Fraser Coast, up the Bruce Highway but turned off to visit Tin Can Bay, just because! We drove through mile after mile of coniferous plantations, boring, boring, boring. The planters did have the grace to leave the odd stretch of native forest, but after a...

off we go!

Feb 26, 2014 - Hervey Bay

Wednesday 26th Today we packed up from Bundaberg to head off, we decided that we would try and get to Hervey Bay, this is only about 140kms away so it was an easy drive that took us 2 hours. So we arrived at 10am, set up, had lunch and then decided to go for a bit of a drive around the area. First we headed to the esplanade along the water foreshore, very much a Mandurah like feeling along the ocean. Lots of cafes and bars. The foreshore has had a lot of work done in the way of walks and again there is a great water playground for the kids....

Feb 19, 2014 - Hervey Bay

It was very hot, high 30s, when we arrived in Hervey Bay this morning. We had hoped to go to the CP up on the headland but the only site they had left was not big enough for our van so we looked elsewhere. We tried another but it was all cement and tar and no trees and radiated heat so we settled for the beachside one at Pialba where we had water views and grass and trees all around - much more pleasant in the hot weather! Richard swam and rode his bike for miles along the bike path by the foreshore. We don't seem to be doing anything very...

Oct 18, 2013 - Lady Elliot Island

Trains, Planes and Flippers We were awake and antsy before the 4:30 alarm rang! By 5:10 we were wrestling with the ticket machine at Central Station to get a pair of airport commuter train tickets. By 9ish ( and thanks to a time zone change) we had completed two Qantas flights, and we were sorting our belongings in the Hervey Bay Airport so as to meet the 10 kg limit (and leave most of our luggage at the airport) for the single-engine flight to Lady Elliot Island in the Great Barrier Reef. We arrived on the island a bit before 2 pm and...

Sep 24, 2013 - Week 2 Tin Can Bay

18th-25th September Saturday was market day in Tin Can Bay. Walking down, we were surprised to see that it was a large market with a variety of craft and produce. Tried our luck in the sea food raffle but once again no luck. Couldn't resist the produce buying rockmelon, pineapple and strawberries. Getting quite warm now so we head back to the park. We have been enjoying lots of walks around the area and decided on Thursday we would do a day trip to Hervey Bay. Taking about an hour and half we arrived on a grey overcast, very windy day....

Aug 22, 2013 - 5th Entry

G’Day mates, I think I have found my little corner of paradise. It is called Mission Beach – a small beachside town that the big resorts have not found …yet. However, I think it is just a matter of time. I was first here in 1978 and felt then it was beautiful. A deserted beach with calm tropical waters and beautiful palm trees hanging over the beach. Now it is a small town but still a quiet beach. However, the palm trees are no longer here. Two years ago a category 5 cyclone hit this area and the palm trees were ripped out. I have included...

G’Day Mates We have finally got our good weather with our days consistently around 24 degrees Celsius and beautiful sunshine. It is currently 7:30 in the morning and I am sitting outside on the deck beside the pool at my brother’s place in Hervey Bay. Another day in paradise. Hervey Bay is on the coast so have been walking on the beach or sitting beachside while having a beer or two. My brother has what we consider to be a great house built for the tropics. One whole wall of their great room completely opens up so the inside flows to the...

Feb 16, 2013 - Singing in the rain

We woke up, after a night of torrential rain, to.... more rain. No surprise there then. We thought that perhaps we would drive down to the harbour and see about going across to Frazer Island independently and not as part of a tour. Following further investigation we found that a) we could go as foot passengers or b) we could take our 4WD over and drive ourselves. We were oh so tempted to take the car, but after calling Tom and seeking advice, we decided against it. Just as well because on further investigation we found our hire agreement...

Feb 15, 2013 - Hervey Bay here we come

Good Bye Brisbane. We had a blast. We reckoned it was about a 4 hour drive to Hervey Bay but we wanted to stop off at Noosa first, as everyone had told us how lovely it was there. Needless to say the rain was back with us. Hello old friend, we haven’t seen you for a day. Oops my mistake, you dropped in on us last night, when we were on our way out to dinner, and curled my hair again for me. Well, rain or not, off we set, Sat Nav at the ready. We proceeded along quite well, but somehow went wrong. Deviating off of Bruce Highway to end up on...
