Feb 16, 2005 - Fraser Island

Next stop Fraser Island, the worlds largest sand island, by way of Hervey Bay. The island has been created over millions of years by sand drifting up the coast and is now a very green lush place full of amazingly beautiful fresh water lakes, pure bred dingo's (wild ozzie dogs), really big spiders and lots of extremely deadly snakes! There are no proper roads on Fraser, just sand tracks and the beach to drive along. This means that you do one of two things to get about, get yourself a 4 wheel drive and camp, or get on a big 4 wheel drive bus...

Jan 19, 2005 - Fraser Island

Okay - so went to Fraser island and it was wickid, had a mixture of weather. when we went over on the ferry it was dull and overcast and really muggy. The first day we spent by going to a lake in the dunes called lake Wabby. It was really green and apparantly is full of tea tree from the surrounding forest, dunno if thats true but hey. Anyway, we all slid down the dunes into the water and there were foot long catfish (No, not baby sharks Fi!). I loved it, they were swimmming round our legs and seemed so tame. After that we drove up the...

Jan 12, 2005 - On the road again

Feels a bit weird being back on the road on my own - the first time since before Adelaide, and that was only for a couple of days post-Melbourne. Slipped back into the grove very easily however, and arrived into Hervey Bay about 4 hours later, after an easy drive up. Pretty pooped after a bit of time behind the wheel for the first time in a month, so took it easy for the rest of the day - suspect this is also in part as I'm re-adjusting back to the increased heat & humidity up in Queensland after the (relative) balminess further south.

Sand dunes, Indian Head and Champagne pools...stunning! VERY VERY GOOD! TS - Did a 1 night/2 day tour with Kingfisher Bay Resort. Amazing place. First day went to 2 really nice freshwater Lakes and swam and sunbathed. Saw lace monitor and...

Dec 21, 2004 - Hervey Bay (Pialba)

Kevin: We arrived in Hervey Bay (technically Pialba) before noon, and wandered around the cute little town for awhile before lunch. We decided to spend an extra day here to relax and unwind, and had very nice time just reading by the pool, playing ping pong, and watching Bend It Like Beckham in the common room. We managed to exchange a couple of books and just generally relax, and considered staying here over Christmas, but in the end we decided to head on down to Brisbane. Travel Notes: Bus Rockhampton to Hervey Bay, 4.5 hours, would've...

Dec 15, 2004 - Hervey Bay

Hey All, Well I didn't add my photos yet because I have yet to find somewhere that I can do it and have the time to do it as well. Anyway I arrived in Hervey Bay this morning after a long over night bus ride. It is a very nice little resort town that is the gateway to Fraser Island (where I am heading tomorrow for the next 3 days). Anyway it is really hot here so I spent the extra $2 to upgrade to a room with A/C. Considering I am spending most of the time for the next 2 days in a tent. Anyway I met with my group today and most of them...

Nov 9, 2004 - Hervey Bay and the dingo's of Frazer Island

And so it was off to Frazer Island - the world's largest sand island I'll have you know. Having weighed up the thousands of options available to tour the island we decided to avoid the self drive tours and go with a company that took you to all of the sights on the island. It turned out to be a wise choice hearing some of the stories on the island about jeep crashes and injuries. Over the 2 days we visited the 2 lakes on the island which were crystal clear and went swimming in them. The first, Basin Lake, we swam across in search of turtles...

Oct 27, 2004 - Noosa, North of Brisbane

Virgin Blue airlines are terrific -- easy bookings, easy changes if you need them, and painless check in.This time, the car vendor were Hertz, and they were terrific. We drove north of Brisbane to Noosa, where we found a lovely place on Hastings street near the beach. At this time of the year, the water is smelly, and we found a very nice swimming pool at the Aquatic Centre. Gerry had some work to do, Darlene needed to contact her friends, and we succeeded in achieving both objectives. This place is a busy town with all of the needed...

Oct 20, 2004 - S: Sand between our toes - Fraser Island

Dear Friends, Whole Lotta Sand at Fraser Island A bit north of Brisbane, just off the coast from a little town called Hervey Bay, lies Fraser Island. Fraser is a popular tourist adventure destination because it's an island made entirely of sand but it has a tremendous diversity of flora and forests on the island due to its abundance of fresh water. Quite a unique place. We booked ourselves on a 2-day organized trip to tour the island in a custom-built 4x4 tour bus that looked more like Godzilla the Monster Truck, than Buddy the Greyhound...

Oct 14, 2004 - Hervey Bay and Fraser Island - still in Queensland!

Mon 11/10 Warm Up at 5am - it's getting earlier every day!!! We got the 6.30am bus to Hervey Bay - not a lot to say - slept a lot of the way.... bus trips here certainly aren't as entertaining as in NZ!! Couple of nice little towns along the way, but that's about all..... Arrived at Hervey Bay at 1pm, by the time we were taken to the Hostel, checked in etc it was 2pm, had a mosey, but this place is a retirement town, with the main reasons for tourism being as the points to go whale watching, and to go to Fraser Island. Nice big beach, but...

Pippa on Tour

Oct 3, 2004 - Fraser Island 3rd - 6th October

We arrived in Hervey bay with no more mishaps and chilled out in our hostel which was really clean but pretty big. We had a look round and did a little shopping for our trip to Fraser as there is not much on there you have to take all your food with you. We had a safety briefing and then a fairly early night in preperation for our trip. We got up and sorted out our vans we were going to be taking, they had been packed up with the the camping equipment so we just had to load our stuff and food and then we headed off. We got the ferry over...

Sep 1, 2004 - Fraser Island

Brisbane to Hervey Bay (Fraser Island) 300km (1,320km so far)... 01.09.04: Well, the rotten weather followed us to Fraser. We got the early morning ferry in the pouring rain and so stayed in the car until we reached the Island. We had rain all night which made a hell of a racket on the tent plus, doing the '3am toilet run' was not alot of giggles! Anyway, we survived and were ready for our Fraser adventure. The night before we had popped into a 4WD hire company and asked for some driving tips since Paul hadn't driven on sand before and we...
