Jul 12, 2005 - Rainbow Beach and Fraser Island

On the 9th we headed over to Fraser Island where anyone whom has been will tell u it is the most beautiful place in the world (besides Vancouver, j/k). There are sand dunes there and beautiful lakes and walks and lots of wildlife eventhough we really didnt see that much. All day u drive along the beach and the inner tracks on the sand and pray that u dont hit something or roll over in the sand. By night u meet up with everyone else and party. it was an awesome trip and i think that of everything that i have done so far, my mom would like...

Jul 12, 2005 - Australia - home

Today we fly from Fiji to Sydney, and home at last, to Brisbane. We have had a wonderful holiday. Such extremes from the glitz and glamour of Las Vegas to the villages of Fiji. It has been so diverse. We had such a fantastic time in Canada with our families, touring, camping, shopping and sharing memories from our childhoods. Even though we had such a great time, it is always nice to come home. Thanks to my Dad, Alf, for looking after our precious belongings in Brisbane, my son, our house and our lovely animals. Thankyou also to the...

Jul 1, 2005 - Fraser Island

The bus journey between Airlie Beach and Hervey Bay (the launch point for Fraser Island) is 14 hours so we decided to break it up with an overnight stay in Rockhampton. This isn't really a tourist town which was ok since we arrived at 6.30pm and were leaving again at 6am. Expecting a quiet town we were surprised to find several thousand American soldiers there on leave after doing training in the area. We found the only restaurant not occupied by them, had a quick meal then got an early night. After another 7 hours on the bus we arrived in...

Jun 21, 2005 - Fraser Island!!!!!!!!!!!

Monday 6th: We caught the early Greyhound bus to Hervey Bay and very annoyingly we left before the kitchen opened, so we had to leave our bag of food shopping! Gutted! Especially as we're on such a budget! And the worst thing was there was cheddar cheese and branston pickle in there that Chris and I had bought for lunch the day before!!! :o( In Hervey we just had a group meeting at 3pm and met the rest of our group, sorted out the shopping list and Jenny and Ducky went to the supermarket to purchase it all. Our group seemed really lovely....

Jun 12, 2005 - Fraser Island

I had a billiant time on Fraser. Like most people ive spoken to, its been my real highlight of Australia so far. I hired a 4x4 with 10 other guys - almost all students i think - Paul from Ireland, Chris & Dave on a gap year from Southampton, Jorg from Germany, Aleks & Albert from Geneva, Derek & Sarah from Montreal, Louise from Bath and Zoe from... England somewhere! We bought all our food and drink the night before after deciding on our shopping list and got up on the 12th at something like 5.30am. aaaaggh. We packed the truck up and had a...

Jun 11, 2005 - Fraser Island

The day after our sailing round the whitsundays we headed further south to Hervey bay where you can get a ferry accross to Fraser Island - Worlds largest sand island. In Hervey bay we were put into a group of 11 people and then told to go out and buy food and drink for a 2 night camp on the island. We were then given the keys to a huge 4 wheel drive van and told how to drive along the beach avoiding salt water, sand dunes and Dingoes! We then set off, got the ferry to the island and started drving down very rough dirt tracks in search of...

Jun 10, 2005 - Team Dingo hits Fraser Island

After a quick shifty down to Hervey Bay, we met our Fraser Island crew, and after watching a couple of enthralling safety videos (explaining what to do if you saw a dingo etc), we hit the supermarket and 'Bottle-O' for our camping supplies. Supermarket Sweep over (and by goodness we were the quickest team), we went for an all you can eat Chinese, and over a few cartons of wine and beer we did some team bonding! Up early (5am) the next morning to pack up all the gear, after having further safety talks, and getting our van keys, we were ready...

Jun 8, 2005 - From airborne @ Bull Ridge to the surf guru

Very soon after the last update I said 'bye' to Steve and Kelly with massive thanks for use of their place and hospitality for the couple of weeks I was there :-) ... but leaving Sydney in Friday afternoon traffic probably wasn't the smartest move as I was wedged in traffic for a couple of hours after crossing the Harbour Bridge. I found myself at a place called Wiseman's Ferry but as it was dark and I couldn't find anywhere to stay I decided a patch of nice grass would suffice ... but woke to find myself on the entry to the golf course and...

Jun 8, 2005 - Hervey Bay/Fraser Island

Since we've arrived here in Australia our rath to bare is the rain.......................it just keeps following us where ever we go!!! On the way down to Hervey Bay, we did a little detour to Agnes Waters or the Town of 1770. It was a marvulous place to see, but not much to do here unless you have lots of money or surf. We took the token pictures, ate a picnic lunch at the beach side park and then dashed outta there as fast as we could because it was getting dark by 5pm these days. As soon as we arrived in Hervey Bay the rain came poring...

Jun 7, 2005 - Noosa

So another 16 hours on a bus and I am in Noosa! Of course the main focus was to check my e mail as I had found out that Mum, Angie, and her mum and dad are coming out to Bankok to see me! what a surprise! and I get to stay in a 5 star hotel, bonus! But I also recieved an e mail from Caroline Radford, a parent I keep in touch with, from Leweston (my travel agent as well!!!) She had sent me the phone number of the Lyons, some more ex parents who I got along well with who had now emigrated to Australia! Would you believe it, they live near...

We had an ensuite with a double which had a single bunk above & then another single which always works well as a bed to dump stuff !! The resturanat was nice , pool lovely & the whole place is very colonial !! As we had already booked our trip to start the next morning (7th) we were able to wonder around the area but it rained...

May 29, 2005 - Fraser Island (07/04/05 - 09/04/05)

This event marked a number of firsts: First organised 'tour' First go in a 4X4 First drive off-road First use of a light stick First sighting of a Dingo. In hindsight, this was also the best value of all of the east coast backpacker things; $175 basic plus $25 insurance liability reduction represents an absolute bargain. Food, fuel and liquor are extras but what of it? It could've been awful; stuck with 10 other random individuals. Imagine the horror if they'd been 18 year old skate punks who still thought they were the first people ever to...
