Dec 4, 2010 - Great Barrier Reef

Hello! Anyways, today we had the best day ever! It was my favorite day of vacation so far. In the morning we woke up to sunny skies (It was a first one for a while) so we were very excited to explore. We were planning on taking a boat out to the Barrier Reef, but it was booked so we decide to take Air Whitsunday to the Great Barrier Reef. We arrived at the airport at noon, sunny skies, no wind. Perfect flying weather. I was very nervous and so was Mom. We have taken little planes before, and the experience was not fun and very bumpy....

Feb 13, 2007 - GREAT Keppal Island

Hi All After reading Jamie's self pitying email about being stuck in Brisbane (in the rain), I thought it only fair to tell you of my wonderful 2 days on Great Keppel Island. Unbelievably a few mates from 1770 were also planning a trip to the Island, and kindly brought their trip forward by a day so I would have some company while I was out there. Great Keppel is only 30 mins on a ferry from the main land (Yeppoon), but it's like arriving in paradise...white sand beaches, turquoise clear waters...you get the picture. The highlight of my...

Jul 27, 2006 - Whitsunday Islands

Apr 25, 2006 - Day 98 Update - Whitsunday Islands

We checked out of the hostel then sneaked back in to get some extra sleep but we were caught out and asked to pay a late check out fee, when the lady left them room we packed our bags and done a legger out the back door and over the fence, it was a crap hostel anyway and they were not going to take any more money off of us. We didnt sail until 4pm so we hung around and done some chores and killed a bit of time. We set off for the sailing trip and picked up a crate of Carlsberg which were 500ml cans, in Australia they only have small cans...

Feb 4, 2006 - Whitehaven Beach on Whitsunday Island and snorkelling!

Today we went to Hill Inlet on Whitsunday Island - it was beautiful, as you can see from the pictures! It was also the first time we donned our attractive stinger suits to go for a swim. It's such a pity that you have to look like a complete prat to enjoy a swim in the sea. But I suppose it's better than being killed or put in immense pain by a jellyfish. Then we got back on board our boat for a spot of lunch and some snorkelling. It was so exciting seeing all the little fishies close up, but there weren't as many as I had expected to see....

Jul 1, 2005 - Sailing the Withsundays

Kristie jobber i...

May 29, 2005 - The Whitsunday Islands

Firmly entrenched in the bacpacker must do list, sailing around the Whitsunday Islands seemed like a bloody good idea, especially if you went on a big old boat. The most expensive of the East Coasters at $420 dollars, I booked late and at least saved $100 on the original price. I picked the 'Derwent Hunter', a twin masted siling ship made in 1946. A lot more style than the modern Maxi Yachts and because yuo couldn't cart booze onboard, I hoped it would also be wanker-free (this turned out to be true) Met at the Marina by a guy so Captain...

Feb 17, 2005 - to the outer reef

We are at Airlie Beach, a centre for tour activity on the Whitsunday Islands. It's all about snorkelling, diving, getting out to five star resort islands, skinny bikinis and open air bars for the gap year set. It's very warm. 30 degrees in the day, cooling off to 29 at night. God bless the inventer of air conditioning. Today we booked into a large boat cruise to the Outer Reef. We were told that's where the best coral viewing would be. Our reef area is called 'Knuckle Reef' and is 100km offshore. We are travelling by high speed boat in...

Jan 25, 2005 - Farewell NZ, g'day Brisbane!

Howdy! My last few days with the gals in Queenstown, NZ, were fun with some white water river rafting in full wet suit, flippers, boogie boards, eddys and whirlpools! I then took a flight to Brisbane, Australia. Stayed in an awful place infested with ants which were even in my pants! My room was above the most popular bar in town. They were intent on getting everyone drunk as quickly as possible and the bar closed when the last person left, usually around 4am. I played a game of Twister at the bar but slipped away into the night when they...

Oct 1, 2004 - Sailing around the Whitsunday Islands 29th Sept - 1st Oct

OK we all woke up with major hangovers and headed into town. We decided to have a look round as we weren't due to get on the boat until 2pm. We passed the office for the company we were sailing with and decided to pop in. Oops,we should have checked in the day before never mind! After a bit of frantic we have to go back and sort things, we got it all done and then we were sat by the marina waiting to board the boat. The boat was a sailing boat and there were 12 people on board plus two crew which was nice as it wasn't too crowded. The...
