Oct 17, 2013 - Great Barrier Reef

Thurs., Oct 17th The Great Barrier Reef! What an adventure! We boarded the catamaran that took us about 45 minutes from Cairns out to Green Island, a cay in the 2,600 km long system, composed of over 2,900 individual reefs and 900 islands. Astronauts tell us, it is the only living thing that can be seen from outer space. Most of our group got off here, but some of the more intrepid went on, further out on the reef to do real deep-sea stuff. Staying on the island though, we first took a glass-bottom boat ride, seeing sea turtles,...

Dec 9, 2009 - 7th Wonder of the world

If your going to see one of the 7 Wonders of the World, there is no better way than to do it except... perfect. A special way to spend a day on the Great Barrier Reef is with your family. Of course we would have loved to have spent it with all family and friends, but I haven't checked the lotto tickets yet. The truly only thing missing to make it a perfect day was Spence.... Hope you had a good day working Spence. We left Cairns and got on Board the ship, sat at the back of the ship in lounge chairs and sailed out to the Great Barrier Reef...

Aug 4, 2009 - To the Great Barrier Reef

Tuesday 4 August Our catamaran trip over to the Green Island resort was not until 1pm so that gave us time to repack and put all the warmer clothes into a suitcase that we could leave at the Shangrila, as we had decided to have an extra night there on the way back from the rainforest, which was a big help. The weather was typically tropical, bright blue skies, but warm rather than hot. The cat journey was only 45 mins – I was a little nervous about being a poor sailor but it was no problem, and the journey was beautiful – lovely views of...

Sep 13, 2008 - Green Island

JOEL: I went to Green Island. I was at the reef and we saw fishes and we saw a big fish and there was a glass-bottom boat and we went in it. I said to Mum and Dad and Josh :Do you know why it's called a glass bottom boat? Because it's got a big bottom." (Hilarious!) It was beautiful. Dad saw a dolphin, and Dad was swimming with a fish. We saw a blue starfish and a little stingray and little fish. And Dad saw a crab. JOSH: We went to "Green Island". It's an island in the "Great Barrier Reef". It's got shops on it. It's the only rainforest...

Dec 8, 2007 - Green Island... and crocs!

Today we headed out to Green Island, off the coast of Cairns. It is a small Island resort, not all the way out to the reef. We got a 45 minute ferry to the island and there is lots to do. On the ferry we booked a sea walk and paragliding. First up was the paragliding. This was a lot of fun and a new experience for us both. The harness seat below the parachute was for two people and we were suspended pretty far up from the boat with great views all round. It was also really nice just to relax on the boat while the other people got their...
