Dec 7, 2008 - Fraser Island camping day 2

Today we woke up around 6 ish and got some brecko on the go, the menu for this morning is sausages and eggs....cereal and bread! again reeeeaaaaaly nice! We decided to just eat the sausages as the eggs would be too messy and we were no where near a camp site where we could wash up so we rinsed everything and took it with us to try and find a capsite somewhere along the way to wash up properly. On the itinery for today was Indian Head, Champagne Pools, Eli creek....and the famous Maheno shipwreck on the beach! We started off with the creek,...

The A&E Adventure

Dec 6, 2008 - Fraser Island camping day 1

Today we had an early-ish start, we all met at reception at 7am and the hostel drove us to the garage where we pick up our 4x4. When we got there we had another long talk with the man in charge about do's and dont's and then he completely changed our itinery due to tidal changes! The one golden rule we WERE told to follow was always stick to the itinery so that was not a good start! Then we had to sign loads of forms and go round the car checking it for marks, then we had to go through all the tents to make sure they were all ok and the...

Nov 4, 2008 - Fraser Island

Today went to Fraser Island, the largest sand island in the world. Due to this you need access by a 4x4 ony. Headed across from Rainbow beach. Another fantastic hot day. Firstly, headedalong 75 mile beach, got to see amongst many birds, a dingo (wild dog native to australia), a few sting rays, a manta ray, as well a one of the last humpback whales in the distance as they migrate. Despite the climate, even go to see a seal, a very rare sight apparently. Got to see the coloured sands on the pinnacle, and the shipwreck the Maheno. Got to swim...

Nov 4, 2008 - Stuck in the sand in Fraser Island

From Hervey Bay we took a boat to Fraser Island for 2 days and we stayed at the Kingfisher Resort. While there we rented a 4wd and decided to drive ourselves. Big mistake. The terrain was extremely difficult to drive on and on the second day the little Jimmy which we had broke down due to some seawater getting into the engine. Anyway we survived our little adventure in the sand!

Oct 12, 2008 - Noosa

Oktober 2008, in Brisbane angekommen.

Sep 27, 2008 - Australia - Fraser Island

Our two days exploring Fraser Island were two of the best days of our trip so far... After a 7am pick up from our campsite, we were whisked down to the harbour, where we purchased a much-needed cup of tea and boarded the ferry for the 45 minute crossing to the Island. The boat trip was great fun - watching the waves Phil thought he spotted a shark: a distinct possibility. A combination of rip tides and man-eating sharks makes the sea surrounding Fraser a no-go zone. As the tour progressed we learnt more about the marine life in the area's...

Aug 17, 2008 - Sand Sand Tree Sand

I write this about a week after returning from Fraser Island. Though the speed of typing is slow and the energy expended will leave me weak for the rest of the day. For you see I have past from the ranks of the young and sprightly 28 year olds to the less then a year to the dreaded 30. Oh well such is life. On with the story. I think I might try and do a bit of Saga style to reflect my new found age. We set forth from the main land of this far flung Island in the winter of 2008. The luck of the mighty adventuring pair Adam the still young...

Jul 29, 2008 - Fraser Island

Jul 5, 2008 - Hervey Bay and Fraser Island baby!!!!

We arrived in Hevery bay just in time for our Fraser Island briefing! We met everyone in our group and had to watch all these safety video's about being eaten my dingo and stuff! We then had to go shopping for the group so Lizzie and i volunteered to go with these 2 other guys! Probably THE single most stressful and annoying experience of my WHOLE trip! Will have to explain this story in person some other time!!! Anyway off we went to Fraser Island! And guess what... it RAINED THE WHOLE TIME!!! it was ridiculous!!! We were all walking...

May 31, 2008 - Fraser Island

My arrival at Hervey Bay; the gateway to Fraser Island coincided with the worst Australian weather so far, but the trip was booked and fees had been paid, except of course for the additional expenses that seem an inevitable part of all Australian bookings. I was joined on my self drive trip by 9 Hullites, a Derry man well boy actually, a taffy from Cardiff who hasn't been home for 17 years and 3 Germans; Max, Max and Isabelle. The group from Hull were kids with a passion for football, heightened by Hulls entry into the premiership and beer...

May 21, 2008 - Hervey Bay & Fraser Island

We got the bus seven hours further north to Hervey Bay with the sole intention of taking a trip from here to Fraser Island (this might seem a bit unfair to Hervey Bay but we did spend a bit of time checking the area out and there really wasn’t much to do or see). We got the ferry to Fraser which is the world’s largest sand island: it is composed 99% of sand but the interior is filled with rainforest and lakes. We were booked on a 2 day 1 night Fraser Explorer tour with 15 other people and a guide. To get anywhere on the island you need a...
