Jun 13, 2016 - Ravenshoe to Cardwell

13/6/2016 Monday What a night! It blew a gale in gusts, and rained fairly continually. We put our awning in which helped to stop the van rocking. I filled a hot water bottle - it was a bit cool. This is the first rain we've had in 3 weeks, so we can't complain. There was just some light, misty rain this morning. After packing up, we walked over to the Ravenshoe bakery and had a farewell coffee with Pam & Don at 9am - some had sausage rolls, one a meat pie, and one had fruit - an apple turnover - with cream! Pam & Don are heading to Cairns...

Aug 18, 2015 - Day 52 - 53 / Meunga Creek / Cardwell

Another day, another new camp site. Today we moved on about 50km to Meunga Creek CP which is only 5km north of Cardwell. It is only $15/night here compared with $30 or more in Cardwell so we decided to stay here. It is quiet and the sites are really spacious, the amenities are good and the washing machines are only $2 and I need to do the sheet and towels. We have been in to Cardwell to look around and visit the Info centre and we still haven't paid here as there is no-one at the office. I dare say they'll collect sometime. There are some...

Aug 16, 2014 - Airlie Beach to Cardwell

Time to move on again. The last couple of days in Airlie Beach had been raining and a light breeze. We packed up all the outside bits of the van in between rain showers the day before departure to be able to stay as dry as possible when we set off. The weather was fine the morning we left Airlie Beach and it was a really clear run all the way to Cardwell. Our original plan was to stay overnight in Townsville but we made an executive decision and skipped Townsville to get an extra day in at Cardwell. By the time we got to Cardwell it was...

Jun 25, 2013 - Murray Falls & Cardwell

23rd - 26th There has heavy clouds and rain for the last couple of days. We were lucky enough for the clouds to disappear so we could see the moon at its largest. Monday started as another cloudy day with the sun breaking through about lunchtime. Later in the day I walked down to the beach at Tully Heads. Tuesday the sun is shining and we have decided to pack a picnic lunch and head to Murray Falls. Unfortunately Elaine and Blu wont be travelling with us today. Elaine has been feeling unwell the last few days. The Murray Upper National...

Did a few day trips from his place, Tully, Murray Falls, Innisfail, Wallaman Falls, Lucinda, Broadwater National Park and a day trip to Hinchinbrook Island which involved a walk across the island, up the beach and back across at the top. On 8th Aug we headed for Paronella Park with a free camp overnight stop at a very small rest area at El Arish. Paronella Park was built in the 1930's by...

Millers on the Road

Jun 21, 2007 - Etty Bay to Cardwell Queensland 03 to 04 June 2007.

Jeff Awaking to rain which did not last too long into the morning, we were soon able to go out and inspect the beach, and a sort of boom net we had seen last night. I had noticed this to be floodlit when I was out at 10.30pm; Sylvia had admired the almost full moon shining across the waves when she had been out. The boom turned out to be a 'stinger net' which provides a safe area to swim in the water from the stinging jellyfish which can be deadly. Some beaches had withdrawn their nets as the jellyfish were supposed to have gone due to the...

Dec 7, 2006 - Mission Beach, QLD

MISSION BEACH - Wednesday 29th November to Friday 1st December (Days 33-35) Arrived the previous afternoon to Mission Beach. Wow! This really was a place we could chill out. We had booked 3 nights at the Sejala Beach huts. Our hut was named 'Beaches', and as the name suggests it was right on Mission Beach, a coconut fringed 14km golden sanded beach with views over to Dunk island. It was paradise. Well it would have been if the local sand fly population hadn't decided to munch their way through our legs for the entire stay. The other thing...

Sep 17, 2006 - Tinaroo Lake to Paronella Park

Tinaroo Lake to Paronella Park (136km) After a slightly chilly night we went for a cycle this morning around Tinaroo lake, which was opposite the campsite. It was still quite fresh, perhaps because we were high up in the hills. The view over the lake was beautiful, almost alpine. We cycled as far as the dam, but couldn't get across it, so stopped to admire the view before cycling back. There were several campsites on the other side of the lake, which were operated by the National Parks with limited facilities, but as they were along dirt...

Sep 10, 2006 - Cairns / Mission Beach

Started the day by grubbing around my hostel trying to pack my bag in the dark with the help of a torch, headed to catch my first bus over here (greyhound) from Cairns to Mission Beach and Amanda came down to wave me off, she looked brilliant considering her 2 hours sleep whereas i looked awful, so thought we'd kill the half hour before my bus left by sneeking into the Cairns Shangri-La, and dipping our feet in their pool and having a game of table tennis! Amazing what walking around like you know where you're going does! Felt much...

Sep 30, 2005 - Mission Beach

Today we found that a plan is only accurate until the operation begins. First on the agenda was an early pickup of our motorhomes. We had eighteen to pick up, and another tour group was scheduled to pick up 20 at 9 am. So, we were supposed to beat the pack and pick ours up from 7:30-9:00. The first group of 6 started ok. The hotel was supposed to have another taxi at 8. No one arranged for one. The one that showed up at 8:10 didn't know where the MH rental agency was. While we were a bit confused, Maui MH rentals was even worse. They had 38...
