May 15, 2007 - Airlie Beach / Whitsundays

Chilled 1st day spent at lagoon swimming, said bye to Nat again in Airlie beach whilst she went on her boat, met up with Lisa, Essex gal from the farm stay, we teamed up with a British couple & won the hostel quiz on our 1st night & got a bottle of champers for our efforts- our winning tie break coming from being able to name Michaelangelo's (teenage mutant ninga turtles) weapon of choice- numb chucks don't you know! Did a 3 day live aboard sail around the islands - boat was cool considering it was the total budget option!- Tallarook/T3-...

Dutchie on the move

Mar 3, 2007 - Airlie Beach

The Aussie's seem to have a fasination with giant things... giant mangoes, giant prawns, giant pineapples, giant cows, giant gumboots. We had to get a piccy of a least one of the giants! Before we met with nat, we had agreed that we would do the Whitsundays and Fraser Island together. We made our way down to Airlie Beach- the Gateway to the Whitsundays. We booked a package and managed to get a couple of free nights in a hostel. This hostel had to be probably the worst hostel ever. They had the strangest people staying there and a rat...

Feb 16, 2007 - Day 156 - Undara lava tubes

The lava tubes were worth the drive. The camp was in the middle of the outback which allowed us to get a great view of the night sky unfettered by light pollution - until Sam thought she heard the sound of a ferral pig in the bushes and bolted for the car. The tents were surrounded by wild kangaroos which made for interesting views while munching on our morning Weet-a-bix (the joys of having regular breakfast cerals after all the breakfast noodle soups in Asia!!) The tubes themselves were also very impressive. The drive back out to the...

Feb 7, 2007 - Airlie Beach/Whit Sundays Sailing

I'm eventually able to escape flooded Townsville at catch a bus down to Airlie no thanks to the Greyhound operator who continually tells you there are no buses only to stumble across one parked up at the station ready to head south. Luckily I expected this to be the case and had all belongings packed and ready to roll. The journey took around 3 hours and at last the sun was shining the first time I'd felt sun on my body for a good 3 weeks, a nice feeling. On route down the Bruce highway you could see the aftermath of the floods the nearby...

YOU ONLY LIVE ONCE

Jan 19, 2007 - Australia - Airlie Beach

Another day and another long drive, but first we decided we would stop at the Capricorn Caves. We managed to jump on the back of a tour that had already started and began our descent into the caves. Found early in the 19th Century they have been a tourist attraction since that time. These caves are slightly different in that they are in the side of a mountain and above ground and the most impressive cave, the Cathedral Cave is beautiful with fantastic acoustics. They do hold weddings here so if you are into caves this could be your thing!...

Dec 16, 2006 - Ocean Rafting/Snorkelling in Whitsunday Islands/Whitehaven Beach

The overnight bus that took us from Cairns to Airlie Beach arrived bang on time at midday, although an overnight 11 hour bus ride sounded at the beginning quiet a nightmare, it wasn't that bad as we got quite a bit of sleep during the night and were only really awake during from 7am which there was plenty to do and pitstops and the driver had his own brand of comedy o keep us entertained. We checked into our hostel and had a little nose around Airlee Beach. We both had a good feel for the place, although quite small, it had a real...

Nov 14, 2006 - Airlie Beach and The Whitsundays

The Whitasundays were beautiful. We stayed at Airlie beach for 2 nights and managed to get two days sails in, we couldnt get a suitable sail where we cuold stay on teh boat so we settled for an aprtment with a view of the sea. It was gorgeous there and we really enjoyed it. The first day we went out on a sailing maxi, the Ragamuffin. The wind had really picked up and we got to experience some very fast sailing which was great fun. Unfortunately it did mean we couldnet snorkel where we were supposed to but it was an enjoyable day...

Sep 4, 2006 - Airlie Beach

We spent two nights back at Airlie Beach when we got back from the Whitsundays and surprise surprise it was wonderfully sunny and hot! The afternoon was passed by a particularly rough game of frisbee on the beach, and then that nightWe went out with our boat crew which was an excellent. The following day we went job hunting to see if we could get back onbaord one of the boats so we could see the Whitsundays in the sun, unfortunately we couldn't give ourselves away so we carried on our journey north to Bowen in the hope of fruit picking work.

Aug 13, 2006 - Looking for Popeye's autograph

Greetings, we're at Airlie beach on the east coast, which is a backpacker town to the max! It's tropical and warm and lovely and we've already had 2 gecko sightings, 2 possums and then of coursre the bats and cockatoos are all back and making a racket in the mornings. This afternoon we're off on a 3 day sailing trip to South Molle Island in the whitsunday islands, since Rob went ahead and won a FREE trip!! A 50% discount for us to sail around islands snorkelling, swimming and soaking up the sun sounds good to me. Of course, the fine print...
