Nov 4, 2016 - Ubud to Australia 4th to 5th November

Awakened by the cheeky monkeys smashing the empty bottle of Bintangs on our balcony! How funny! Walked down to Ubud Market. Got a T shirt for Tim 80000 and some hippy trousers for me 50000; also got a few mosquito bites up my legs. Chilled by pool; messaged Belo for lift to airport. Belo took us to airport 400000 (TAXI would have been 300000 ho Hum ... we like Belo) Also gave him our clothes we were discarding (all unclean) including Timz pants! Keep thinking about weather we should have done this but they were going in the bin and we got...

Aug 22, 2016 - Trip to Cairns

Yo yo yo, I just returned to Townsville from an awesome trip to Cairns (a city about 5 hours North of Townsville) and I'm hyped to tell you all about it. It all started when I met a fellow in my Earth and Geochemistry Class who was double majoring in Urban Planning and Environmental Engineering. He had started school some time ago then went to New Zealand and worked in the tourist industry for 18 years. We got to talking about Engineering and the environment in general and I ended up going out to dinner with him and a few other students to...

Aug 12, 2016 - Seisia, The Tip, Bamaga, Cairns

Had a very early start so the alarm was set for 5:30am. Had the bonus of a beautiful sunrise before we set off by bus from Seisia to the tip of Cape York, the northernmost point on the Australian continent. The 50 km trip from Seisia on a rough dirt road reinforced that my decision to fly back to Cairns instead of a 10 day trip by 4WD was the right one for me. (The ship was full for the return journey so I could only get a one-way passage.) From the end of the road, we had a fairly rough scramble over a rocky hillside to get to the tip...

Aug 9, 2016 - At sea - north from Cairns

Today I'm excited to be catching a ride on a cargo boat from Cairns to Thursday Island, stopping off at a few other places on the way. I needed to be at the wharf at 1:15pm so dropped Alexander off at his cattery about 11:00am, packed up & secured the caravan in case of bad weather – I’m only gone for 3 nights so it wasn’t worth storing the car & van, I’ve just left them on-site but put the awning up, etc. Got a taxi to the wharf at 1:00 & met the other 24 passengers. I’m the only single traveller but we’re all in much the same age group &...

Aug 7, 2016 - Rollingstone Beach to Cairns

It rained very heavily from Cardwell thru Tully & Innisfail which makes sense as this area has the highest rainfall in Australia. Fortunately, it had stopped by the time I got to Cairns although there’s still some showers around. An easy set-up with a site I could drive into so I was all sorted by lunch-time.

Jun 28, 2016 - UPDATE NOTES Days 14 - 20

Hi All Airlie Beach and backpackers left behind as we travelled further north 1st stop being Townsville. Townsville is a military town (Army) plus they claim to be the unofficial capital of North Queensland. It has a large port and is the terminus of the train line from Mt Isa. We have been here before and one of our pleasures is to take a ferry to an island about 10kms offshore named Magnetic Island, named that way by Captain Cook in 1770 due to some interference with his ship’s compass. On arrival at the island a bus takes us to the...

Jun 15, 2016 - Cairns

Wednesday 15 June After a night of heavy rain, it was good to see a brighter morning greet us. Had a leisurely start and then headed into Cairns Central shopping centre to check on a couple of things. Don had checked up on voting, and we were able to leave the car at the shopping centre and walk two blocks to the Commonwealth Centre. We soon found out that most caravanners had the same idea! If we thought the queue was long when we got there, it was nothing compared to those waiting as we left. They only had two people on absentee voting to...

Jun 14, 2016 - Cairns

Tuesday 14 June After a very wet night, the day has greeted us with showers, some rain and some sun! We set off for Stockland shopping centre to meet Uncle Harold at Muffin Break for morning tea. It has been a delightful day, and one we have been looking forward to. Harold said he was looking forward to it more than us, but we can debate on that one. It was great to see where he is living now when we dropped him back home for his lunch. We did a couple of jobs and then picked him up again at 1.15 to go for a drive around Cairns. We checked...

Jun 13, 2016 - Ravenshoe to Cairns

Monday 13 June The wildest night on the trip so far. Mainly light showers of rain, but the wind picked up and blew all night. All the awnings were rolled in, and all bunkered down for the night. The morning started off quite dull, but then got a surprise when the sun broke through. We packed up the vans and went up town. Needed to visit chemist to fill a script, and then adjourned to the famous Ravenshoe bakery for a coffee together before setting out on different paths. The bakery was virtually non stop customers! We purchased potato top...
