Oct 23, 2017 - Sydney and surrounding

We have successfully arrive upon the shores of Australia. Before meeting our friend Cate we had a couple hours to kill so felt the best thing was to head to the harbor and get pictures of the iconic Harbour Bridge and the Opera House. We navigated the train system to and from the harbor and then to Sutherland station to meet Cate. With Cate we did a little site seeing from the car along the cliff drive. We also stopped a popular handglider spot, and saw 6 different gliders. Which by the way a Lawrence Hargrave invented. I also fell asleep...

Oct 22, 2017 - Touring Sydney and Bondi Beach

October 22 2017- We had a full day in Sydney, so we got the Hop on Hop off bus and toured the sights until we got off at Bondi Beach. Our goal was the Bondi Beach Club for lunch, but when we got there it was plain that without reservations we could not get in. So we walked around it, took pictures, and then found another beach side restaurant that was delicious. Up to this point it had been a beautiful day, but when we finished our lunch the skies opened. We were about as far away from our hotel as we could be on the Hop On/Hop Off, and...

Oct 21, 2017 - Flying into Sydney and doing the Opera House

October 21 2017-Another travel day—took a rainy, windy ride down to Brisbane Airport, then a flight over to Sydney. Here we separated from our Adventure Caravan group and went to the Marriott Sydney Harbor hotel. We had made our own arrrangements for the Sydney portion of the trip. We used points for a nice room at the Sydney Harbor Marriott, which, as the name implies, is right at the harbor. We were walking distance to great views of the Sudney harbor bridge, and we could easily walk to the Sydney Opera House. In fact, we learned that a...

Oct 19, 2017 - Sydney

After a very long 15 hour flight we arrived in sunny Sydney. Our hotel room wasn’t ready so we went for a walk to the Botanical Gardens on the harbor for our first glimpse of the roof of the Sydney Opera House shining in the sunshine. We didn’t have a lot of energy so we sat on a park bench and enjoyed the park. Once back at the hotel we crashed out for few hours, woke up feeling better and went out for dinner. Hyde Park was turned into a huge open air Noodle market with open air eating places from every Asian market you can think of. There...

Oct 15, 2017 - Off to New Zealand part 1

Ugghhh. Only got a couple hours sleep. Woke up just after 4am. I was worried I wouldn't wake up in time to catch the shuttle to the airport. Showered and headed downstairs to the lobby to meet with Sophie, who was also catching an early ass flight. After getting to the airport, I was still a tad too early to check my bag, so I just waited around. Finally checked into my flight, made my way thru security, and found a restaurant to eat breakfast. Flight was delayed about 45 minutes, but boarded and strapped in got my 3hr flight to New...

Oct 14, 2017 - In Sydney!

arrived into Sydney and it was just as I had imagined... a big city located right on harbor. Drove over the Sydney Bridge and saw an amazing view of the Opera house. We stopped in front of our hostel and we unloaded our bags. I didn't realize how many people weren't staying in the same hostel. So we drop our bags off and meet downstairs for dinner. Marin and Linda walked over from their hostel to eat with us. We decided to eat at Harbor bay. Took a bit to walk there, but def worth it. All the restaurants were a tad expensive so we decided...

Sep 16, 2017 - Australia

This week I made the short hop across the Tasman to Australia for a lovely week in the sunshine. I spent the first half of the week staying with relatives in beautiful Wollongong, about an hour and 20 minutes outside of Sydney along the coast. It's a lovely little harbour town with great restaurants, gorgeous beaches, a theatre, good shopping and in the shadow of Mount Kiera. We drove up to the Mount Kiera lookout one day which offered incredible views of the whole coast and townships, including Kiama, Shell Harbour and Corrimal where we...

Sep 6, 2017 - Getting underway!

So, we're finally underway! After a few months of planning our first holiday in New Zealand has begun. It was a pretty low key day, really. Just a train ride from Newcastle to Sydney and a night in the airport hotel. Train ride was fine (for Australia) and the hotel is good. In the morning, we will just have a 15 minute walk to the airport - heaps better than getting up at 4:30 tomorrow morning! Anyway, we are going to get a good night's sleep and let you know more tomorrow. Happy trails, RandA

Aug 15, 2017 - The departure

Just a brief opening for the adventure. Left Sydney with a refuelling stop in Singapore. I always enjoy that airport.. as far as airports go. flight on to Geneva via Heathrow. All pretty straightforward. Films on board were of little interest - what happened to art house cinema on planes? But I did get much joy from listening to 3 BBC radio programs on the late Leonard Cohen. He is such a wonderful speaker and his songs/poems are a joy to listen to. Just enough time in Heathrow to install a new SIM card in my phone and I thought I was...

Aug 3, 2017 - Dubai to Sydney and home

Wednesday 2nd August 2017/Thursday 3rd August 2017 Dubai to Sydney and home Up at 5:00am, got ready and we were picked up at 5:45am for our trip out to the airport, where we waited for our flight till 8:45am. We first flew to Bangkok, then a wait of an hour and a half then to Sydney, landing at about 7:45am. The flight was very turbulent making it hard to sleep and we even felt slightly sick by the time we had landed. We took quite a while to get through immigration because we had been in Uganda as part of the trip, but eventually made...

Jul 26, 2017 - Manly Beach....check; Opera House Tour....check

So if there was one recommendation that everyone had for us on our trip to Sydney, it was to take the ferry to Manly Beach. As such, we embarked upon that journey this morning, taking the regular ferry over (30 minutes vs. high speed ferry that gets you there in 18 min). Best part of the ride had to be the cliff views that one sees off to your right as you approach Manly - it is at the mouth of the Pacific and the views are quite dramatic. As for the town, it definitely had a different vibe than the rest of the city - more laid back with a...
