Feb 15, 2011 - Last Evening in Australia

15th Feb '11 After Ali walked the kids to school, we went to her parents house to say goodbye. They are leaving tomorrow evening for their trip to the Mid-east & Europe. Then the 3 of us, (remember Mike is at work) went to a Gallery to look around and then had lunch there. On the way home after lunch we stopped to pick up some chocolate. And a special bar for Charlotte as Margret asked her the night before "what do I have to do for a big hug?" Charlotte answered "A chocolate bar". Well this evening the 6 of us went to a Japanese...

Feb 14, 2011 - House's With a View

14th Feb '11 Today we got up early. Margret walked the girls to School with Ali. I spent part of the morning reading Dean Koontz on my Kindle. I spend a lot of time reading. Great investment that kindle. Too bad it wasn't pink. (Ok if you haven't read Stephen King's novelette 'UR' you won't understand why pink!) The three of us went for a late lunch at the Palm's Cafe at Stanwell park. I enjoyed prawns, and Margret had a toasted smoked sandwich, with the works! (special sauce, some kind of lettuce etc.) Ali enjoyed something with lamb. Then...

Feb 12, 2011 - The Angry Ocean

12 Feb '11 Even though the day started out overcast we decided to go to the beach. The ocean was angry! Wollongong We strolled along the beach, watching the sea come in, and it was coming in angry! However we enjoyed the walk. I had my back to the ocean at one point, Margret was taking a picture. You guessed it, along came a rogue wave. Soaked me from head to toe! Being so near the ocean when the waves were so high, and the surf was pounding the shore, makes one feel very insignificant indeed! It is actually a bit scary! Not to me of...

Feb 11, 2011 - Swimming Carnival

This was an exciting day! We were going to go to Canberra with Mike, but cancelled as the school was having their swimming carnival (Swim Meet). Their different teams were called 'houses' Red house (Holly) Green house (Charlotte), Blue house, and another one. Holly won 1 first place, 2 second place & a team relay ribbon (1st place). I spoke with the Assistant Principal, and an organizer and asked if I could sign up for a race. It was a real hot day, I just wanted to get into the water. But they declined. Good thing because the way those...

Feb 10, 2011 - Helensburgh

After a quiet morning our friends Helen & Steve picked us up and we traveled south to a place called Mt. Keira. We had lunch at restaurant there called 'Mountain Top'. Mike has been after me to try an Aussie Burger. So I ordered one, 'A Lot'. That means 'loaded'. It was kind of unique. In addition to the usual stuff, it had a fried egg, & a beetroot(beet). Gave it a bit of a different taste. Would I order it again? Would you? Anyhow after visiting the lookout (outlook), and taking a couple of photo's we drove back to Hburgh, and stopped at...

Feb 3, 2011 - More of the Coast

3 Feb '11 The cyclone landed and unbelievably and thankfully there was no loss of life and the damage was much less then they expected. It was because of preparations I think. Also their buildings are built to withstand cyclones. Most houses are built from brick. Two babies were born at the evacuation centres. I bet at least one of them will be named 'Yasi'. There were a couple of people that I am sure were lucky to be alive. One fellow who lived in a caravan park (RV Park) said he was going to stay cause he had lots of beer and there...

Feb 2, 2011 - Another day in Paradise

2 Feb '11 My ribs are still sore from the Billy Connolly show last night. Laughed so hard! Another great day! At 11 a.m. Margret and I decided to go for a walk around the town. We spent the next couple of hours in and out of shops, buying a lottery ticket for the Aussie Lotto. ($20 million). I would love to bring back that aussie money to Canada. We stopped for lunch at a small bakery and had a pork bun and a chicken bun. I think we used to call something similar as 'hoagies'. Cyclone Yasi is expected to land tonight up in Queensland. It...

Feb 1, 2011 - Another Hot Day

I have to tell you, the first picture, outside temp of +42 wasn't the hottest it got to. it did reach +43. What do you do in that kind of temperature? Mostly stay in the pool. Margret and I went to the pool after lunch. Ali & the Kids joined us after school. Met some very nice Aussie people at the pool, including 'Penny' the blood lady from the local health centre. They gave us some tips for our upcoming trip to Sydney. In the evening after Mike got home from work we picked up some friends from Mike and Ali and were on our way to see Billy...

Jan 30, 2011 - First day of school

Well today was the first day back to school after their 6 weeks off. The kids were quite excited. Note, the kids in Australia still wear school uniforms! Wouldn't that be nice if they did the same thing in Canada? Mike is back at work, Ali busy with her project. Margret and I headed off to the local pool. Very nice pool. It has a main pool, and a toddlers pool. Margret and I went in the main pool of course! Temperature today reached +38, the reason for the trip to the pool. This pool and land was donated by some rich guy, and is free to...

Jan 29, 2011 - Return to Helensburgh

25th - 30th Jan '11 The trip down to Manyana was good. We stopped at some place that ended in 'bong' and Holly and I shared a pack of fish & chips. Sure was lots of it, and good too. We had a great 5 days at Manyana. Most of our days were spent at one of the numerous beaches around with names like 'washer woman's beach' and other wondrous names. Some too hard to pronounce. After a day in the surf, battling the waves, some evenings my whole body hurts. But what fun! Some of those waves sure can smash you into the sand. We spend lots of...

Jan 23, 2011 - On to down under

Did I ask the question if we are now down under, does that mean we are from 'up over'? I don't feel any different being upside down. So we got up at 5 a.m. Fiji time, bused to the airport and cleared security & boarded our flight. Another 747 and also on Air Pacific. Ran into a bit of a hitch for not reading the fine print on our tickets. The part that said 'important, confirm your flight 24hours before flight time'. The result, we lost our seats at the front of the plane. However all turned out well, we were as far back as you could get on...
