Apr 18, 2017 - Departing of the clan

We all go our separate ways! We all had a little sleep in compared to a cycling day then it was a quick breakfast and time to packup. Geoff was the first to go, alone this time as David had already left. Sandy and Ian headed off I took Ray into Cowra to collect a rental car that he brought back and loaded his bike and things into. Leanne had left by then, heading the same way as me. Via Goulburn. Gaylene and Simone waited for me to return before they left. Gave the key to the house for Ray to drop off and I left. Stopped in Boorowa as it...

Apr 16, 2017 - Day Three Unexpected Greenthorpe Loop

A fall, a detour and a fun lunch meeting Jim headed to the hospital to collect Robyn and leave for Pt Macquarie for home and sign in to hospital Goran left with the fast group to ride to Wyangala Dam and further Gaylene, Simone, Geoff and I started the Wyangala Dam moderate (usual) loop. As we hit the 'pick a plank' bridge out of town it came up as a surprise for Simone (she was in a larger group) and she got her tyre caught in a gap between the planks and went over and hurt her elbow on a big bolt in the bridge. We decided to return to...

Feb 22, 2017 - Cowra

We were at the Japanese garden by 9am. It was the perfect time to visit with hardly anyone else there and before the day got too hot. The garden was absolutely beautiful. I would love to see it in springtime as there are lots of cherry trees and I think it would be absolutely stunning. It was good to be able to go somewhere like that and be able to take the dogs with us. They behaved perfectly, though Ruby was absolutely fascinated by the carp in the lake. I think she was trying to work out if she could get in the water with them! From the...

Feb 21, 2017 - Binalong to Cowra

Woke up to a sunny, but very chilly morning, although the weather forecast was for the day to warm up. Our drive this morning to Cowra was via Harden, a very quite little town called Wombat, and Young. The area around Young was predominantly cherry orchards. Unfortunately, the cherry season is well and truly over and all the roadside stalls were closed. The day had warmed up quite quickly as promised, and by the time we reached Cowra. it was quite hot. After setting up camp at the Cowra showgrounds, we went for a bit of a drive to orientate...

Sep 25, 2016 - Church in Cowra

Sunday 25th Church in Cowra We went to the local Uniting Church with a congregation of about 45 which was very nice and the folk there were very welcoming. Went to the Tourist Information centre and watched the excellent Hologram about the night that 1,104 Japanese Prisoners of War staged a breakout from the POW camp here at Cowra. To the Japanese, capture was a great shame to themselves and their family and they would rather face suicide and death than the shame. A lot of the Japanese had given false names for that reason. There is a good...

Sep 25, 2016 - Cowra - POW camp

Sunday 25th Sept - Cowra - church and drive Today we headed off to church with the intention of attending the Salvation army just to be different. The presence of only 3 cars outside 5 mins before service time had us do a rethink and we went down a couple of blocks to the Uniting Church and were made most welcome at their Cafe Church held on one Sunday each month in the hall with a more relaxed style including discussion on questions arising from the talk. Today is Social Justice Sunday. After church we dropped into the Info Centre and...

Sep 24, 2016 - Cowra - Sakura Matsui festival

Saturday 24th Sept - Cowra - Sakura Matsui Festival (Cherry Blossom) Today we want to go to the Japanese Gardens although we 4 have been there before. It is a lovely day and when talking to a family nearby in the park, we discovered they are musicians (strings) travelling Australia for a year. They are playing at 1:00pm at the cherry blossom festival (called Sakura Matsuri). They call themselves the String Family and have a cool logo. Check out http://www.stringfamily.com.au if you would like to hear some samples of their work. We’ve just...

Sep 24, 2016 - Cowra - Sakura Matsuri

Saturday 24th Cowra Sakura Matsuri , Cherry Blossom Festival Well we awoke to find that the river has gone down about a metre but it is still running very fast. Today is the Cherry Blossom Festival up at the Japanese Gardens. These gardens are one of our very favourite places and the cherry blossoms are out here as well as around the town and they are stunning with their delicate pink and white blooms. We have been lucky enough to have been here 3 times and we have never seen the gardens looking as lovely. There were so many different...
