Oct 16, 2016 - Gordon to Coolamon

16th October; Gordon to Coolamon. We left around 10:30 this morning and eventually got to Coolamon around 3:00 after a few stops and following some slow traffic…. Remind us never to use the Barton Hwy while the Murrumbateman Field Days are on….. Carol was most amused as we passed through Bethungra to see a chap sitting on a camp chair keeping an eye on the famous “spiral”. I told her he would be a Gricer waiting to photograph a train climbing the spiral which is world famous and inhabited by such people… Shortly after we saw a train one the...

Sep 24, 2016 - Dubbo to Coolamon

I woke up early this morning & was ready to leave by 8:00 am when my neighbour mentioned that he thought the Newell Highway was closed. I spent about an hour on the computer & finally established that it was indeed closed by flooding between Forbes & West Wyalong, exactly where I wanted to go. Not only that, there were also other roads closed which meant I needed to make a big detour via Cowra & Junee. I could have stayed in Dubbo but the forecast is for more rain so it seems things are going to get worse rather than better. The Newell...

Sep 22, 2016 - Cold Temora

Thursday 22nd Cold Temora We woke to a fine, cloudy and cold day and the wind is icy. A quick call into the Information centre to check road conditions and found out that because of the flooding we would not be able to go north to ' Utes in the Paddock' at Yarratandal which is west of Parkes, and instead we intend to head north tomorrow via Young. We filled the day in by driving to a very progressive little town called Coolamon which has a new Cheese Factory, and a heritage precinct comprising of a rural museum, a fire station museum, and a...

Sep 22, 2016 - Temora - visit Coolamon

Thursday 22nd Sept - Temora - Coolamon for afternoon Last night we had NO rain and a steady breeze all night, so the ground looks much drier this morning - till you walk on it for a few minutes. We’ve both put the awnings in so that we don’t have any issues packing up if there is more rain or high wind while we are out today, or during the night. First we headed to the info centre to ask about the road to Coolamon and we were advised to use the long way S to Junee then W to Coolamon avoiding the road which goes SW from just south of Temora....

Jul 23, 2012 - We're on our way!!!!!

Day 1…..Canberra to Coolamon. Very disappointed we didn’t stop at Junee, Oh dear this really nice caravan park one block back from the main street and close to shops, cafes and the high life of Coolamon is an astounding $10 night powered site. It would have cost us $27 for the same thing in Junee…. 2400 persons live in Coolamon and its strikes us as a very clean, neat and prosperous little town, on to Balranald tomorrow. A leisurely 4 -5 hour drive across the Hay Plains. Balranald reputedly has superb Vanilla slices not that I'll get to try...
