May 31, 2017 - Days 12 - 16, Moonee Beach

Five nights at Moonee Beach Caravan Park (just north of Coffs Harbour), with Al and Chris in their van just a couple of sites away. Good to see Al (Chris didn't arrive to the fourth day we were there). Park faces a reserve on a creek opening to the beach. Cost per night was $37 and we got a night free with our Road Tripper card. Great for pumping nippers for bait, and Paul and I make a great team when pumping nippers (he pumps and I pick them up). Most of the fish we caught (bream, flathead and whiting) were too small and had to be throw...

Jun 5, 2016 - Rocking and Rolling

Rocking and rolling was the theme this week. Rolling seas early in the week had us surfing the waves. We sighted our first Dolphins and the Young Endeavour ship on our way to Port Stephens. The following days more rolling seas had a pod of Dolphins surfing the wave behind us. As they surfed they were rolling round. Dolphins in front of the bows were leaping 1 to 2 metres in the air. We had our own Seaworld display without the crowds. The first of the whales were seen north of Port Stephens. Beautiful sunny weather continued every day until...

Mar 21, 2016 - North to Coffs Harbour

Thurs 17th Mar - we had to drive 40km the wrong way to get onto the Pacific Coast Highway but there was no alternative. The motorway had little traffic and it was a case of setting the cruise control to 110kph and sitting back. We stopped for lunch along the way and then we're in Port Macquarie. Checked into the Waters Edge Hotel and went for walk along the waterfront and into town. 299km today. Just one night here and we have booked breakfast for the first time this holiday. We are on a first floor room with a small balcony, the usual bits...

Mar 27, 2015 - Off to Brisbane

Friday, March 27 We packed up everything, including whatever from the fridge was portable, and checked out about 10:00. Pam and I hopped into a taxi to go to the marine centre, while Marilynn and Cheryl chose to spend the time until our train left at 4:00 hanging around the resort. The marine centre offered a performance by porpoises and seals, turtle tanks and a penguin pen. We fed large fish who came to the surface to snatch food we held out in tongs and Pam fed a fish to a fairy penguin. Fairy penguins are the only penguins native to...

Mar 26, 2015 - Last full day in the tropical paradise

Thursday, March 26 A sunny morning. Pam, Marilynn and I left about 9:30 for the shell beach that Pam and I visited yesterday. Cheryl took her camera (a rare event!) to take pictures of Diggers Bay from the trail in the opposite direction. At the beach, we went up the road a few hundred metres because we had learned there was a university aquarium, but unfortunately it was only open on weekends – a missed opportunity. Pam and I beachcombed for a while, while Marilynn took photos of the colourful birds. A friendly Australian woman told her...

Mar 25, 2015 - Beach walks

Wednesday, March 25 An overcast but warm day. Pam rose early to see the sunrise at the beach. She reported there were many people out at that time, walking and enjoying the relative cool. Once everyone was ready, we headed for the trail that leads along the coast to Coffs Harbour. When we were in sight of the harbour, Pam and I turned back because we had been there the day before. Marilynn and Cheryl carried on. Upon our return, we found my puzzle book’s cover had been pecked and torn. A lesson learned – don’t leave anything a turkey might...

Mar 24, 2015 - Coffs Harbour Town

Tuesday, March 24, 2015 Today Linda and I headed off to the Big Banana, a kid's spot advertising skating, toboganning, laser tag to name a few. Unfortunately the busy highway and lack of crossing areas stopped off from crossing over. So we continued into town to the shopping center for a cool drink, as the temp is now reaching 30 degrees. From here we took a taxi to the botanical gardens and had a wonderful stroll through the gardens. The area was sectioned off into different areas, rainforest, China, Japan, North America etc. It was...

Mar 23, 2015 - Another day in paradise

Another relaxing quiet day. We walked into town about a half hour. We spotted a black cockatoo high in a tree. It had just begun to rain just before getting there. We wandered the mall and then headed to Woolworths to replenish our groceries and wine. Took the taxi home *note from Linda: Monday, March 23, 2015 A warm but overcast morning. Cheryl, Pam and I decided to walk to the Park Beach Plaza, about a half hour away on foot. Marilynn preferred to relax at the resort. The route to the mall lead up a hill through a residential area of...

Mar 22, 2015 - Coff's Harbour, day 4

Sunday, March 22 Again a day of walks and hanging about – the weather was warm but sometimes overcast and later in the day, it poured. Cheryl shared her account of the wedding, which she said differed from typical Canadian weddings in many ways; for example, there was no sit-down dinner, only canapes and everyone stood during the wedding ceremony since no chairs were set out. However, like many Canadian weddings, there were toasts, loud music, dancing, an open bar and a good time had by all. Cheryl and Pam left about 9:30 for the...

Mar 21, 2015 - quiet day

Saturday, March 21 Everyone slept in today somewhat compensating for our early getups of previous mornings. The weather was overcast, but still warm. Since this resort is a wedding venue, we’ve seen many people dressed in suits and ties on their way to the chapel and reception room. Yesterday we pitied the men in their heavy suits; at least today it was somewhat cooler. However, we’re sorry that Cheryl’s niece will be married on this rainy day. Apparently their wedding venue is at the top of a hill with magnificent views, but those views...

Mar 20, 2015 - Coff's Harbour

Friday, March 20 We were up at 3:00 a.m. and trundling our suitcases in the dark up the sidewalk to the train station by 3:30. It was warm even at that time. Shortly after four, we had checked our bags in – mine was over the 20 kilo limit but a little redistribution into my and other (it’s nice to have friends) backpacks solved the problem. We bought breakfast and ate it as we waited by the tracks. The ride was five hours long through beautiful countryside – rolling hills, lots of greenery, fields with horses and cows grazing, creeks, ponds...
