May 7, 2018 - Sprouts

We went to see Graham's new business venture in operation today He is growing organic sunflower sprouts. His plot is on an organic farm in the nearby hills. This is the biggest bag of potting mix I've ever seen! It's an interesting process and it takes 6 to 8 days from start to finish. The sprouts are packaged in 2 sizes and the local shops are taking them as well as a couple of wholesale fruit and veg suppliers. Finn was hoping to take Grandad fishing after school today but we had a rainy afternoon so hopefully tomorrow will...

May 5, 2018 - But wait ........there's more!

After departing Port Stephens we had a long day's drive to Lennox Head. We stopped at Ulmarra on the beautiful Clarence River to catch up with Paul and Kath on Moor R & R - a very short half hour stop as we still had a couple of hours driving to do. Then it was on to see our son and family. Grandad and Malia played chess. Finn played his first ever game of soccer. Then we did a trip up to the northern outskirts of Brisbane to catch up with Tim and Amanda, and their lovely daughters, Ashleigh and Carrie. This is the view from...

Dec 15, 2017 - Heading to the Coast

Lovely weather as we headed down through Warwick to Stanthorpe where we did some shopping and had lunch. What a busy, progressive town. Headed south for a quick photo stop at Wallangara on the border. This is the town where the trains had to swap. One side of the railway station is the NSW side and the other was the Qld side. No longer in use but well restored. Headed through Tenterfield before turning to Casino along 100 kms of winding and twisting roads - nice view but heavy going. Casino is a large town of about 10000 people before the...

Oct 15, 2017 - Ballina

Sunday 15 October 2017 Lots of rain during the night, with some of the heaviest rain we have ever heard! Quite a lot of wind gusts to add to the equation. The morning dawned overcast, but little rain, and only a few light showers occasionally. Had a lovely day out visiting Lyn & David, meeting up with Cheryl after maybe close to 50 years and meeting her husband Colin. After some chatting at the house we headed to a cafe at the wharf for a lovely morning tea. David gave us a tour around Ballina, bringing back memories for Don where he spent...

Oct 14, 2017 - South West Rocks to Ballina

Saturday 14 October 2017 We are now settled in Ballina, hunkered down in the van with very heavy rain to keep us company! We were able to pack up in more or less fine weather this morning, and left South West Rocks at 8.10am. We won't be sorry to say goodbye to daylight saving, getting a bit tired of getting up in the dark most mornings! We were surprised that the weather was being kind to us. That didn't last very long, and things certainly deteriorated before Coffs Harbour. The traffic through Coffs was worse than ever, and we decided to...

Dec 19, 2014 - Ballina

Hi All, today I went to Ballina, mainly to get some bubbly and a turkey breast for xmas and while there had a look at the river frontage, really pretty. Went to Budget Eyeware to organise new distance and reading glasses and visited some op shops. In one op shop I found the pink hair decoration you see in the photos. I was flabbergasted to see it because I bought one at the Brisbane Riverside markets in 2003 I think it was and have NEVER seen another one, and I am always looking. Some of you know that I make them and will be selling them...

Nov 8, 2014 - Flat Rock

This morning. We were up very early and got all packed up. We had a walk around the Island before breakfast. When Evi was up and Martin came back from his bike ride we spent time together and prayed for each other before heading off just after 9 am. We had a funny experience. The GPS took us all around Tweed Heads and up a very very steep hill. We even thought the truck might not make it, it went so slow. Then it was down a very steep hill on the other side. Phew just made it. We were looking for Coles. We drove down the coast into New...

May 8, 2014 - Ballina, NSW, AUS

Uh oh - another short driving day. We started with a pretty coastal drive along the Miami shores and then proceeded to Palm Beach. Yes, we are on the East coast -- of Australia! Wonder where they got those names? Some nice beach stops in both areas. The surf was up a bit and the water was full of surfers. And we had some fair views of the Brisbane skyline across the large bay. Surprised me, as we were a pretty good drive south of Brisbane by this time. We continued on along the coast, climbed a small hill and found ourselves crossing from...

Mar 4, 2014 - Coffs Harbour to Ballina

We left the Moonee Beach Reserve after our walk and headed off to the Summerland Drive which headed north to Casino, the beef capital of Australia. The road took us through pretty dry country, mostly forested, with some forest plantations, before opening out to pastureland and.....beef cattle. We arrived in Casino around three in the afternoon and all the shops were shut! We discovered they all close at midday on Saturdays. There was however a Woolworth's supermarket that had extended hours, and it had a fresh meat counter, so after a chat...

Oct 17, 2013 - Ballina

10/17/13, Thursday. There are numerous rivers on the way to Ballina (called the Northern Rivers district) including the Clarence River which is one of the largest rivers in Australia. It looks as wide as the Mississippi River but is blue instead of brown! It has an excellent fishing and prawn trawling industry. The river flows through the town of Grafton (known as the Jacaranda City) where we also stopped to admire the Jacaranda tree lined streets. The trees were just starting to bloom so were beautiful. The Jacaranda festival in Grafton is...

Sep 7, 2013 - Maroochydore to Ballina

We left Maroochydore and headed the 303 klms to Ballina. Stayed in th Lakeside Top Tourist Park, where Ted & Bev had arrived earlier in the day. It was great to spend the afternoon catching up with them. We went to the Ballina RSL club for dinner before heading back to our vans with full stomachs and sore jaws from talking so much. We really enjoyed walking down memory lane with them both.

Mar 27, 2012 - ballina, beach and peace and quiet

About halfway to Brisbane is a little place called Ballina which we thought was a bit tatty when we first arrived but that was mainly because the bloke that directed us to the supermarket didn't know his left from his right and we ended up in the middle of nowhere, cock. Anyway we eventually found our campsite and it was fab, right on the river and really well set out so we were chuffed. Never the less we had to go to the supermarket and after finding that and getting back to the site realised that i forgot something so had to trek back, oh...
