Coffee Please

Oct 24, 2010 - Driving!

Sitting here 2230 and listening to some music thinking of the drive I did across the country. That was one of the best experiences I've ever had. The freedom to be on the road, listening to music, no real worries and just enjoying my time. It had been such a long time since I had taken time for myself, time to relax and not worry about work or sacrificing my time for someone else. Now I'm sitting here in Afghanistan wanting to do it again, to get on the road and drive and not be worried about what the next 3 or 4 days hold for me in terms...

Jan 4, 2008 - Afghanistan

After being stuck in Turkey for four days, we finally have made it to our destination, Afghanistan. We landed late at night, but passed over the mountains right before the sun began to set. It is very chaotic and noisey. All I hear is planes taking off or landing. It's neverending.

Mutter Deployments

Nov 6, 2007 - Kabul

Our journey back to Kabul is less than straightforward, with the minibus breaking down at least 5 times during the bone crushing 12 hour ride. After Bamiyan, Kabul is an oasis of paradise. On my last full day here, I went for a walk around the Ka Faroshi bird market and its environs, which I recommend to anyone who comes here. It really is like walking back 100 years in time, with the street lined with bird-sellers in their shops untouched by modernisation. Its time for some final thoughts on Afghanistan. I can't recommend visitng the...

Where's Malcolm?

Oct 29, 2007 - Over the Khyber Pass and onto Kabul

We obtain our permits for the taxi journey to the Khyber Pass, and we're allocated a policeman who acts as our armed guard through the tribal areas outside of Peshawar and up to the border. The border town of Torkrum is very chaotic, but we sail thorugh the border formalities without any problems, book ourselves a taxi and its onto Kabul. Afghanistan's initial impressions surprise us: the brown dusty desert-like hills and clear blue sky are more scenic that we expected. There's no doubt that we're in a country under occupation though, as...

Where's Malcolm?

Feb 11, 2006 - Afghanistan

well it was short but well worth it. Afghans are very pospitable people, the thing that drove me nuts was who do i trust. i did not run into any badies or i probably would no be in uzbekistan at the moment. A counrty that has been war torn for 27 years is slowly moving forward except maybe in kandahar. The education system is shit, power infriquent and food in some areas scarce. old russian tanks litter the highways along with red panted rocks indicating live mines.but what a beautiful county, what this place must have been like in the...
