Akarora Bay

A taste of our scenic drive

Danny makes contact with our NZ friend Lib. Oh and check out...

Didn't get off to the best of starts. A little mix up with the rental agency meant the courtesy car didn't come and collect us at 8.30 as we had arranged. Not a bad sign we hoped. After much form filling and faffing we were finally on the road at 10am. Later than planned, but who cares when we now have an 1994 Mazda Saloon to play with for the next month.

Our first stop was a beautiful settlement called Akoara. Getting there involved a beautiful drive along the rim of an extinct volcano. The area was called Banks Peninsula by Captain Cook as a birthday present to his botanist Banks. This was a place we really wanted to linger longer. The opaque turquoise waters of the bays were calling our name as we sped off back to Highway 1 determined not to get waylaid before we had even started. This place is on our list of must go back to destinations.
