Another even more relaxed start for our penultimate day in Malta.

We were conned again regarding fruit quantities, so we have way too many grapes. And these are nice and tasty, but have large pips. Given J and C have had recent dental emergencies, these pips just have to go! So before breakfast J had to de- pip a plateful! just in case.

After breakfast we went downstairs and had a coffee. We decided to have breakfast here tomorrow, just for a change. When we left, who should be outside the apartments but the owner, Patrick. So we had a long chat, covering diverse topics such as tourism, property development, property renovation, unemployment, mad political leaders, and target shooting. As we parted company, he said he was off to get his beard trimmed - his wife said it was like kissing a cactus!

We did a little shopping and then had some snacks for lunch - C had a Cornish pie (ie pastie) and J a Ricotta and bean pie. The cakes looked inviting, so C suggested sharing an almond biscuit which was quite long, filled with a soft almond filling, and covered in vanilla icing. Very nice but you wouldn’t eat one every day.

We went up to the Post office and posted a card, then snooped about in St James Cavalier. This is a 16th-century cavalier which was built by the Order of St John. It overlooks St James' Bastion, a large obtuse-angled bastion forming part of the Valletta Land Front. It is now a cultural centre known as Spazju Kreattiv (Maltese for Creative Space). ( thanks Wikipedia). BTW, a cavalier is defined as a fortification which is built within a larger fortification, and which is higher than the rest of the work. So there!

Not wishing to wander about in the heat for no particular reason, next stop was the museum of art, Muza - this is located in an old palace building, and contains mainly works by Maltese artists and others who did their work here. We were told that there was no air conditioning , and J and C were handed small plastic manually powered fans to keep cool ( not the rotating sort, the waving about sort) these helped a little. I am too small and couldn’t manage a large fan, so I had to put up with it! There were many evaporative coolers scattered about, but they were there specifically to dehumidify the air ( for the benefit of the paintings) but not to cool things down.

Getting later, so another cool drink, and a return for a siesta. We are eating in tonight to use up our TUCs, cheese, grapes, liqueur, and date biscuits. Just in case this was not going to be enough, a pea qassatat and a sausage roll were purchased! In case you are wondering what a TUC is, it is a biscuit brand here (also seen in Greece) small rectangular crackers in various flavours - full of artificial colour and flavour, but tasty all the same!
