Day 12. Sunday. 25/8/19. Hwange National Park/Thompsons Junction to Victoria Falls.
The train was stationery from about midnight and didn’t move till 7am. Our last leg! We saw hippos in a waterhole - another first. Arrived at Victoria Falls about 10.30am and were taken to Elephant Lodge 10-12k out of town. Wow! Glamping at its best! We were blown away by our ‘tent’ which consisted of lounge/bedroom and separate bathroom/toilet with shower and beautiful footed bath, plus outside shower, plunge pool and deck overlooking bushland. Fantastic! We went to ‘feeding the elephants’ which was incredible - so tame that we had photos taken with them and fed them pellets which are used as rewards. There are 16 elephants on site who are being cared for and recouperated. Some were injured, and others came from family properties where once people could have 1 or 2 elephants as ‘pets’ but they grew too big and each needs 50+kg food per day, so were handed in for care. 20 is the maximum recommended for this site. Lovely lunch, a short time to rest then sundowners on the river gorge to see the sun set, which was beautiful. Right down at the bottom of the gorge we saw some people fishing on the Zambia side, then 2 started their return trek. We watched as they climbed higher and higher, never pausing to rest and after 20-30 mins were at the top. We were all amazed at the speed at which they travelled. Dinner was followed by drinks around a fire. Great! We’ve seen lots of baboons on the side of the road and throughout the towns. Monkeys also.
