Silverton - Streets are all dirt except for Main Street

June 23rd, 2019

Today, we rode the Durango-Silverton scenic train. I believe that it is rated as the number one scenic train ride in the United States. It is an old narrow gauge railroad that was originally built to run through the mountains to Silverton and Ouray, Colorado to bring gold and silver ore back for smelting in Durango. It was less expensive to build a narrow gauge railroad through mountainous areas. For the most part, the train track follows the Animas River. The river is still running at a high level because the snow pack was heavy this past winter. The water in the river is at 42 degrees, however, river rafting companies are running rafting tours. A safety man runs the river with the rafts in a kayak to retrieve anyone who falls in the river. The river is rated as class 4 & 5 rapids. No way would I do that. I think that it is reckless and dangerous to raft in such cold and fast running water. While here, a young woman did lose her life during a rafting trip on the San Juan River near Pagosa Springs.
