Venice to Florence, Italy
We woke up early today, packed our bags then down to breakfast in the hotel. We only had to walk about 5 minutes to the Venice Central Railway Station where we had to catch the train at 9:25am for Florence about 2 hours away. It was a very quick journey passing through green Italy. We arrived in Florence just after 11:30am and walked about 400 metres to our “hotel” on the 5th floor of an apartment building, called Nancy House. This appeared to be an apartment with about 4 rooms and a kitchen. We stayed in one of the rooms which was modern and clean. Once we were set up, we went out again to explore the city and see the major attractions. The most amazing attraction in Florence is undoubtedly Michelangelo’s Statue of David in the Galleria dell’Academia, so we headed straight there. There was quite a long queue so we waited for about 45 minutes to get in. The statue is simply magnificent and incomparable. We stood, looked, took photos and enjoyed it immensely. We then walked down to the Duomo to the Cathedral of Santa Maria del Fiore, an amazingly ornate huge building from the time of the Medicis who ruled Florence. We then walked through the crowds to down by the River Arno and saw the Ponte Vecchio, the famous bridge that crosses the river. Had a beer and snack in a bar, then headed back to our hotel for a break. Out to dinner (David had a huge steak and Lynn had deep fried mixed seafood) at a nearby restaurant Chianineria then back to bed. Today was mostly fine with a very heavy shower of rain towards evening.
