Friday 28th: It’s snowing in Moscow, too!! Today was a long day. We left our hotel in Basel at 7.30am to join the others staying at Radisson Blu and then we were all transferred to the airport. The first flight was to Frankfurt where we spent nearly five hours before the second flight to Moscow. Fortunately, we had access to a very nice lounge so the time passed pleasantly enough chatting with Barb F and Irene and a couple of others. With the time difference we did not land in Moscow until nearly 10pm. Golden Eagle people were there to collect us and the trip into the centre was meant to take one hour. However, so many roads were blocked with preparations for the New Year that there were big traffic jams. Eventually we arrived at the Four Seasons Hotel close to 1am and it was 2am before we finally got to bed.
On the positive side, when we flew in we were all excited to see so much snow had fallen and just as we were coming out of the airport it started snowing again - almost to greet the visitors from Australia! Then on the long trip into the city we were all agog at the wonderful light decorations and installations that seemed to be everywhere you looked. Just when you thought you had seen the most beautiful, another even more so would appear. In Russia, New Year is a very big celebration and Christmas doesn't come until 7th January so, whereas in Europe Christmas has finished, it is still in full swing here.
