On Thursday we drove about 45 miles to Ninilchik. This is a small town on the coast on Cook Inlet and is a salmon and halibut fishing location. On Friday we went salmon fishing on the Kasilof River about 25 miles north of Ninilchik with a guide from the campground, Alaskan Angler Resort with AFISHHUNT Charters. We were fishing with a couple from Bowling Green, KY, anong with the guide. We were in a small wide gull boat floating down the river. The weather was 38 on the way to the river but the winds were calm and the sky was clear. Although chilly the first hour the rest of the morning was very pleasant. We all caught our limit of 2 silver salmon, each was about 7-8 pounds or so.

On Saturday we went halibut fishing on Cook Inlet with a charter and six other people, including the couple from Bowling Green, a couple from the caravan and an Air Force airman and his wife from Fairbanks. The weather was rainy, chilly and rough. We fished one area for 2-3 hours and caught a few halibut but then mostly small sharks or "dogfish" as they are referred to. I caught at least a dozen dogfish and did not get my first halibut until we mover to another location further southwest a few miles and ended up getting into some small halibut and had out limit in about 45 minutes. The weather was really getting rough with about 6' swells. All the halibut we caught were only about 30 lbs or so, great eating but small for halibut.

On Sunday we drove to Homer, about 40 miles from Ninilchik. Homer is the end of the road down the Kenai Peninsula and is know as the "halibut capital of the world". I could not disagree. It is a very pretty town on the water and is the end of the highway.

We were able to get all the fish in our freezer of the refrigerator, but it is full. There was about 40lbs of packaged filets of salmon and halibut which we are bringing home minus what we might eat on the way.
