|Took off early, driving about 135 miles to Clayton, NY. When we arrived we found that the 11 am boat tour of the 1000 Islands was cancelled and that we had to wait until 1:30 pm for the next one... No problem, we toured the Antique Boat Museum... lots of mahogany. Then to the boat! Lots of history, lots of rich folks have summer homes on the 1800+ islands on the St. Lawrence Seaway. We stopped at the Boldt Castle... interesting story. This guy Boldt, who owned the Waldorf Astoria Hotel in NYC decided that he wanted to build a rhineland castle on Heart Island as a testament to his love of his wife. Unfortunately, she died before it was completed. He ordered that all construction should stop. For 73 years, the castle and various stone structures were left to the mercy of the wind, rain, ice, snow and vandals. Only in 1977 was it "sort of restored" and furnished with period pieces. Actually Patti and I decided not to pay the entrance fee (we had heard that it really wasn't worth it. Interesting structure though. There was some sort of discussion on the boat about 1000 Island dressing.... didn't quite get the whole thing, but reportedly a new bride and groom came up with a "honeymoon dressing": Lettuce Alone, no dressing!
