Slept in, did laundry, then explored Valdez. This is a neat place, with mountains all around, roughly 4,000 residents. The harbor here is pretty well stocked with a variety of boats, but it has a lot of heavy fishing boats. There is an nice high observation point near the civic center, but as usual, it is hard to capture it in a photograph.

The epicenter of the 9.2 1964 earthquake was 45 miles from here. I read yesterday that the devastating 1989 Exxon Valdez disaster didn’t reach into Valdez. Hope to find out more before we leave. There have been many places where you can have fresh fish flash frozen and shipped home, but here we ran across a place that sells locally caught canned salmon. I had found a few cans earlier for a lot more money. This was $3.50 per can or 12 for $35. There were a few boxes left and the lady said they weren’t sure if they were going to get any more, I assume this season. Fresh salmon was $14 per pound. The name of this place is Peter Pan Seafoods, Inc. 907-835-2076 or vzmarket@ppsf.com.
