While the car was fueled and prepared for return, Kaye was still apprehensive of the time needed to drive the 5 km to the Hertz drop point so we left the hotel just after 0830 hrs.

CDG is still the most frustrating airport in the world and after quite a few loops and a visit to a carpark we made it to the terminal and cleared the car without further problem. It’s a pity pickups aren’t as efficient.

A crowded airport, a very slow shuttle service between T1 and T2 and an unattended bag left at security added to the slow clearance process. We had a coffee and buns while waiting. The bag caused delays at immigration and passport checks were slow. It was nearly 1100 hrs before we reached gate security who then decided to thoroughly search my bag. All a cause of perfumes Kaye had bought which we should have packed in our suitcases. We were seated on the plane by 1140hrs for our planned 1200hrs departure.

The flight to Singapore was smooth, landing at 0640 hrs local time. Duty free alcohol is now unattractive; an increase in price and greater parity between $SGD and $ AUD considered the causes. A glass of Chardonnay is now $20 Sgd; $14 at Rydges Sydney Airport.

The flight to Sydney departed on time at 2135 hrs landing Sydney at 1840 hrs. All clearances were well handled and we were away from the airport in short time.

We checked into the Rydges at the airport and following our complimentary drink in the bar we returned to our room and were bed at 2100 hrs.

We were both awake at 0530 hrs and decided it was an early start with breakfast in the hotel before we took the 0825 hrs Murray’s bus to Canberra arriving 1130hrs. The taxi home and the rip-off tip the only memory to be forgotten.

The Post Operation Europe 2018 report will reveal a number of interesting conclusions to what has been another enjoyable trip. An immediate thought from the driving experience was the greater cooperation between the driver and the navigator and the greater reliance we both placed on the iPad and Maps.me over the TomTom GPS.

Also, internal or domestic air transport, while cheaper, can be more disruptive to travel schedules than first thought about. More to follow!!
