Wednesday 23 May

Left mid morning and headed for Trapani where we hope to get some good provisioning in and access to chandlers and most importantly have the outboard looked at.

Took up a morning near the boat services and the proceeded to investigate what is available. There was a Mercury service centre which we got directed to. We had problems finding it at first but then a kind mechanic drove us to the place, which we would never have found on our own.

Gen described the problem (and in the process learned a few more technical terms in Italian) and in the end after different methods of explaining what the issue was the main mechanic concluded we would have to pull the whole outboard apart and pray. So… conclusion is we need to find another outboard – OUCH!

Wandering back we went into one of the boat yards that were dealing with Yamaha’s. So after much umming and aarrhing we decided that we could buy a new outboard from them.

We then continued into the centre of town, it has a nice vibe to it – although parts a bit run down but nevertheless it’s a nice place.

Thursday 24 May

Gen’s feet are giving him grief so it’s pretty much stay on board day today, well for him at least.

I went to the fishing harbour at the other end of the port and bought some fresh fish and seafood at reasonable prices. Going back tomorrow but earlier as I hope to get some lobsters.

In the afternoon we bought the outboard. Now need to decide what to do with the old one.

Friday 25 May

Went to the fish market but they had sold out of lobsters. Not very happy but I did manage to get a number of local crabs – which were delicious. Took a different route to the market and passed some pretty impressive churches, especially the one which had the “Stations of the Cross” statues. Apparently these statues are paraded down the streets at Easter time, notably Good Friday.

In the afternoon we moved to the anchorage at the top of the harbour. But before that we had a small mishap. We had borrowed a shopping trolley from the boat yard had it loaded with empty gerry cans. There was a gust of wind and the trolley along with the cans ended up rolling off the pontoon and into the drink. The trolley sank and the cans started drifting away. Luckily we had the outboard so could pick up the cans I couldn’t reach. The marinero was a bit confused as to what had happened but managed to retrieve the trolley with Gens help.

Saturday 26 May

Decided we’d just chill today and stayed at the anchorage, not even going ashore.

Sunday 27 May

Left reasonably early and headed for an anchorage near Balestrate.

Monday 28 May

After a quiet night we headed to another anchorage not far from Palermo, the beach resort of Mondello.

Tuesday 29 May

Left the anchorage which had become very wobbly with the increase of the onshore wind and headed for Palermo. It was a bit of hard slog as the wind was on the nose.

Took a berth at one of the boat yard pontoons – not cheap but cheaper than some of the nearby marinas.

In the afternoon wandered around the town which is interesting and really quite impressive when you see all the different architectural styles adopted through the town history.

We managed to find the street market before it closed – it was great – very atmospheric and we managed to get some lovely fresh seafood.
