Bill, Mary Ellen & Bowie - Newfoundland 2018 travel blog

A handsome Bowie

May 29, 2018

Today is all about driving the coast of Lake Superior. We have the most amazingly clear day and the road weaves back and forth between the coastline and inland. We are away early and drive most of the day until we reach an important stop for us. Eight years ago when we drove back to Ontario for my nieces wedding (a very different trip – round trip to the coast in 3 weeks) we stopped at the Information center for Lake Superior at Agawa Bay. If you ever have a chance to take this trip this is one stop you must make. The center is filled with information and memorabilia about the Lake including the sinking of the Edmund Fitsgerald but it is also one of the most scenic locations on the lake. We spent time going through the center again and walked the beach which was calm and inviting on this hot day.

Not far from there is the provincial park called Pancake Bay. It is sandwiched between the Trans Canada Hwy and the beach front with over 475 sites packed into the stretch of land. The beachfront is stunning. Huge dunes and soft sands on one side and roaring traffic on the other. Ontario Provincial Parks are the most expensive by far and the campgrounds are in need of some upgrading however every park has at least one brand new “Comfort Station” which is a building that houses flush toilets, showers and laundry facilities. We have been in five campgrounds so far and every one of them has several of these building scattered throughout. Note: all the radio talk shows can talk about is the upcoming Provincial election which Doug Ford and the PC’s SEEM to be on the brink of losing! Will wonders never cease!

Pictures of the Lake to follow in another blog! but I sent one of Bowie
