Cape Tribulation is 140kms north of Cairns. It's part of Daintree National Park which is the oldest tropical rainforest in the world (180 million years). Some species pre-date the dinosaurs. It’s beautiful, empty and edgy. We felt we were constantly ‘under cover’ and ‘on guard’. ‘Under cover’ from the canopy of the rain forest or to protect ourselves from the rain. ‘On guard’ from crocodiles, cassowaries (tall emu-like birds) and a multitude of bugs.
Cooktown is another 100kms further north up the coast. It’s where Captain Cook spent 48 days in 1770 after his ship, The Endeavour, was damaged on a nearby reef. Today, it’s a small unsophisticated working town of 2000 inhabitants, with people simply getting on with their everyday lives.
