I went into Huntsville today site seeing. Ever since I was a kid, I remember us driving down I-45 pass the Sam Houston statue but never stopping to see it up close. You realize just how tall the statue really is when you are standing next to it. There were some birds sitting on his head and they looked so small way up that high.
I saw a sign for Elkins Lake as I was driving on I-45 to the statue. It is actually a small community. I came across a country club and went in asking if they knew how the community got its name. Judge Elkins out of Houston owned the land and it was his weekend retreat. They said President Johnson use to come out to visit Judge Elkins. After Judge Elkins passed away his heirs developed the land.
