Today we went to the beach to watch release of Kemp ridley sea turtles into the water in the Gulf of Mexico. They are the smallest living sea turtles and are an endangered species. They nest from Tamaulipas Mexico to Galveston TX. Their preferred habitat is shallow costal areas and bays and favorite food is blue crabs. With the cold weather Texas has been having, the water temperature has dropped rapidly which puts the turtles in a "cold stun". When the water temperature drops below 50 degrees the sea turtle becomes hypothermic. If they are not rescued and brought in to warm up over several days they will not survive. When the temperature of the water improves they are then released back into the Gulf.It takes a lot of volunteers!
