|Last night I stayed in the small mining town of Greymouth in a budget mothball smelling room above a pub that had a certain charm. Lots of Greymouth seems t have shut down but it has a cute art gallery which had a lovely greenstone display and I had a nice lunch at the Speight's ale house by the station. The main reason for staying there was to catch the Transalpine Railway which I did today and oh my goodness it was spectacular. The scenery of the southern Alps going through Arthur's pass was incredible, the photos barely do it justice. The journey includes a great audio commentary with local history too and a posh buffet cart where I treated myself to a glass of local wine. So so glad I got the opportunity to experience the journey by train and, I think I cross back again by mini bus on my upcoming tour so should get another glimpse of some of the stunning sights. For now though, I am tucked up in my pod in Christchurch before my tour starts tomorrow.
