We are going to hike around that point on the right.

I loved the color of the water contrasted with the white marble...

Monte Cofano by John

The first half of our trip is over. We checked out of our hotel in Trapani and moved to a hotel in Castellammare del Golfo, which is about 25 miles east of Trapani, and also on the coast of the Tyrrhanean Sea. For some reason, our first four or five meals with Road Scholar featured octopus, calamari, and sardines. Since then we have had veal, roast beef, and meat balls - and more vegetables, and we have been eating too much. It is very easy to eat more than you can walk off when you are our age. The hike today around Monte Cofano Nature Reserve was spectacular. From the moment we left the van we were next to the sea and marble cliffs, and that continued for 6 kilometers. The footing was gravel with a few big rocks so the walking was easy, and we could enjoy the scenery.

Our hotel room at the Hotel Al Madarig in Castellammare del Golfo is plain, but comfortable. Our room is larger than the one we had in Trapani, so it makes hanging our laundry a little easier. we don't bump into each other when we have to walk around the room. Some folks have rooms that overlook the water, but we face a stone wall. Since our room is a little larger than most, we don’t care. We will be here for seven nights. The town itself seems picturesque, and the restaurant we are using for dinner is small and intimate. Several people hugged our waitress on the way out. I am not sure whether that was because of the meatballs or the wine. Wine is included with every lunch and dinner, though Lois & I stick to "acqua naturale".

A few words about the group on this tour. It is great! All our guides have been excellent and they are willing to go the extra mile to help us in any way they can. After numerous phone calls by Irene, Jim's suitcase finally arrived yesterday; we all cheered! The 12 participants are all in good shape, and nobody lags behind. We are all eager to try whatever activity is suggested, and we laugh together, a lot! This trip was rated as "moderately challenging", and everyone was prepared for the energy level expected. We do not have anyone who is impatient with the others. Generally, people show up on time, which is good. We are all Democrats, so if politics comes into the conversation, we are all on the same page!
