Corfue Old Town from our ship

Old guy on a the ship

Today was the Greek Island of Corfu. We simply walked around the old Town of Corfu, no tours of any kind. It is a neat little town set up for tourists from the cruise ships. Not much going on while we were there though as it was raining most of the time. It wasn't until after we got in the ship that the rain quit, the sun came up and the wind blew at 50 knots which delayed our leaving port for 4 hours.

In any event it was a fun day. Corfu, like everywhere else we have been is an old town with both an old fort and a new Fort ( which looks about as old as the old Fort), built to keep the Ottoman invaders at bay. By the looks of some of the locals I think they hoped it would also keep the cruise ships away. But alas, that was not to be. Dorothy and I played our part as a cruise ship tourist, walking around the town but not buying anything. Well we did try to buy lunch but all we were able to get was a beer and a bottle of water. I guess noon is too early, or to late, for lunch in Corfu. I also learned that solid rubber soles on wet marble sidewalks do not go well together. Sort of like walking on ice, a lot of slipping and sliding.

After we came back to the Westerdam we went to a cocktail party for newbies on Holland America. We actually got free drinks so needed to take advantage of that. While we were there we came across the people from Perth, Australia that we met yesterday. One drink led to another and another and yet another then we missed supper so had a makeshift meal on the pool deck of cheese, salad and pizza from the buffet and another drink. Then off to the Blues Club with them drank some more, watched the show and some people dance and then called it a night.

Tomorrow, Dubrovnik. Looking forward to it.
