The weather was much improved today for a free day in St Petersburg (St Petersburg in a day), still overcast but at least it was mostly fine Four of us walked down Nevsky Prospect (the Champs Elysee of St Petersburg), stopping in the bookstore in the Singer Building to buy a copy each of the “Not So Serious Travel Guide to Russia”, which was a brilliant purchase – funny & it exactly summed up our trip through Russia – we got everyone on our trans Siberian trip to sign it. We entered The Hermitage when it opened at 1030hrs, having purchased our tickets on the internet the evening before. Impossible to see The Hermitage in half a day, but we did our best. We spent the morning in the Winter Palace, predominantly looking at Palace Interiors, Russian & European art. A star exhibit was the Golden Peacock. In the afternoon we crossed Palace Square to the General Staff Building, where there is an impressive collection of impressionist works

By early afternoon, we had had enough of looking around a museum and decided to go on a river cruise. We bought tickets for a 1 hour cruise, but somehow managed to miss the boat. At the ticket office they didn’t really understand how we could have missed the boat, but I think they felt sorry for us and let us on a 2 hour cruise without charging any extra

Doing a 2 hour cruise left us really pushed for time, but we walked past St Isaac’s Cathedral on the way to the Vodka Museum. Naturally, we weren’t able to do the tour as they were expecting a large group, but we went into the restaurant to taste some vodka & have vodka snacks, before racing back to the hotel for our farewell dinner (last night of the tour)
