Novgorod

Arrived in Novgorod at 6.30am – dropped our bags at the hotel and had a chaotic breakfast. We then went on a walking tour of Novgorod, which lasted the entire morning. Novgorod was a former capital of Russia, so there is a lot of history. Also a lot of churches, as only churches were allowed to be constructed out of stone rather than wood. As a result, a lot of wealthy merchants built churches and just happened to store their goods beneath the church. Novgorod was also a trading post for the Hanseatic League. In the afternoon we had some free time, so some of us went on a river cruise, which wasn’t particularly interesting and rather cold
